how do you feel about elk cartridges
« on: March 08, 2008, 01:21:36 AM »
of course there is no wrong answer.. but it sure can spark off some debate...that said, having looking over my notes from guiding in mt...that in my thoughts the five most popular chamberings i have seen by far are, in no particular order,,,,300 win mag.....30-06,,300 ultra mag.....270......and 300 wby........one of my real faves,,, the 338 was hardly ever brought to camp...

I voted for the 30-.06 just because it is so common/reliable and probably has killed more deer, elk, bear, and cougar than any of the other cartridges has in the last century.

Way too small of a selection for me to post

300 rum is almost the perfect caliber in my eyes. I has power, but not so much it breaks your shoulder. It is very fast and flat shooting. And it rips gaping holes though vitals of animals at about any yardage. I will never be able to take full advantage of the ballistics on my gun. My guns name is "MEAT".

I am with bowhuntin, for the same reasons, but the 30-30 probably has killed more or put more game meat on the table believe it or not.  Still, a good 30 caliber.

I voted for the 338.  You can't beat a 338 WM for a dedicated elk rifle cartridge.  The 338 Ultra mag would be nice, but kicks too much and just isn't really necessary over the standard 338 Winchester Magnum.

That said, I love my .300 Win mag for elk and for my do-it-all rifle; I hunt everything with it.  I could also easily see having a 30-06 for a do-it-all rifle (especially with the premium bullets available today).

If I were to have several rifles for each game animal I hunted, I would have a 338WM for when I go elk hunting....... a .270 for deer and a 25-06 for antelope........a lightweight 7-08 for the high-hunt for deer.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I voted the 06, but I hunt with a .308, I hunt damn near everything with it and killed quite abit with it. For me it all about placement.

The cartridge means diddly. anything 270 up is fine. Way too much talk about the name of some wiz bang caliber. learn to shoot, stay within your accuracy range and forget about the cartridge.

Agree, and the .300RUM gets my vote. I named my gun "sledge", and when I thumb the safety it's "hammer time!"

i really used to be a man who carried and defended his dearest old thirty o six forever, but when i switched to the three three eight win mag, the light above my head went off.. this was in my opinion the supreme elk killer. it had power to bust through to the opposite shoulder, no matter the angle, and didnt kick.its not super fast nor super flat, its much like a 30-06...it has long range potential and real thump.. it hits like dynamited pile of bricks..i now have two of them, one a savage 116 and the other a ruger 77. i know placement is everything,, but even when hit right ,, not too many sporting guns make bigger holes than 338's and 340's..great frontal area and density.

Voted .243,  I really think the .270win is my fav.  Placement is everything.  I havent had a shot any longer than 200 yrds,so I dont need a freaking cannon to blow softball sized holes on the exit wound side.  With a 150gr ballistic tip round, you will do drop em with a 270win.

Not much beats the .300/ or 7mm for long range knock and trajectory. That'd be my # 2

Bow #1 choice but .300 Win Mag for rifle.  One of the most versatile rounds out there.

I have a .300 WinMag but prefer my 7MM STW.
