Copalis scouting

Ive been out quite a bit lately tring to scout some areas for some fresh sign and havent seen much in the low elevation until yesterday. Theres this one gated road that seems to be pretty productive every year for seeing bear when the cascara is ripe so my dad and I went there and found over a dozen different stumps that have been tore up within the last couple weeks and found one pile of crap there that was very fresh (i'm thinking one or two days as the most) and it seemed to be pretty good size. I dug through it and Seems like it was mostly huckleberries and still some cambian. Cascara is still about 2 weeks away from being ripe around here and didnt find any in it.
Crappy thing is there is a sow Ive seen here several times over the last few years that is pretty good size (around 150 to mabe 200) and Im hoping this isnt from her. I found a small alder tree about 400 yards away that was right beside the road and looked like a small animal had clawed its way up it, maybe a cub?. Anyway, I had a productive day of scouting and Im thinking I know where Im going to hunt August 1st.

Heres the claw marks. This tree was only about 10 inches in diameter. Whatever climbed it only went up about 12 feet. Im thinking its gotta be from a cub. Im really hoping that maybe a big bore is making all the sign, not a momma with cubs.

I can almost guarantee there is more than one in the area. There has been multiple times I have seen 2 different adult bears in that area the same day and one time I saw 3.

I would dump that sow if I seen her at that size.Gotta be a good sized bear to pass a bottle that size...Good luck

Im not too picky about whether its a sow or not but everytime I've seen that sow, shes had cubs.

her cubs would be fine if ya shot her not knowing they were there,I hear ya though..I have never been or hunted the coastal areas.Im going to go down to buckhorn2s and hes gonna show me around.Im excited to be able to see the difference between there and here...

Jesse - Have you checked the highside of the road just over the bridge (before the cut where Keith arrowed that one) from the hiway side? There seems to always be bears in there this time of year...or maybe more towards Sept.

I havent looked too much around there, they are doing alot of active logging right now around that area so I'm not sure how bad it will scare them off. Ive had people tell me that doesnt scare them off hardly at all and they've caught them licking grease off the machines when they get to work in the morning.    I did drive by where your talking about yesterday but didnt see any noticable bear tracks on those banks. Lots of normal elk and deer tracks though. I bet when the blackberries and the cascara get ripe there will be plenty of sign.

Its quite different here. Very wet and brushy in places which seems like heaven for the bears around here.
