Moose scouting

I've posted quite a few pics on them.  Check out some of the moose threads.  Timber has also posted some excellent moose pics for judgeing.  I trust his judgement emphatically.   Trophy is in the eye of the beholder.  Its all what you want to get out of the hunt.  Many drive the roads as they don't want to put much effort into packing one of those beasts out.  Others are hardcore.


I saw that cougar awhile ago while driving to work, drinking down on the Naches river, (If you are talking about that cat).  Its a fairly nice cat.

I saw 7 moose last fall in the hills west of Ione last fall. None really impressive as far as paddles.

Mt Spokane area has some good moose.  If you aren't equipped to pack them through some thick steep terrain, lower your sights and take one on the road.  Brickle Creek is good, no great.  Thompson creek is OK.  There are some open areas on ridges you can glass from the roads.  That is wher eyou may find the real big boys.  The Boise land north of Blanchard hump road has quite a few moose too.  It is mostly walk-in though.  Good luck.  I'm still accumulating points (16 and counting, or is it 17 now)

Hey highlander thanks for more specifics.

I aint afraid of work and I have a job that if I get something down I can call in and take the week off.  I figgure that shoudl be enough time to whittle up a moose _ if it is cool enough.

The part of Thompson creek that I was able to go  throu had so many roads that there would be no point walking too much of it.  I am one of thoes guys that in elk season leave the truck an hour before the sun comes up and is back at dark.  Not sure that is the way to slay a big moose up there but I think I am on my way.

Both my sister and dad have drawn Mt. Spokane in the last 5 years and have had great hunts.  You're sure to have a blast!

Thompson Creek is where most of the hunters will be.  If I were you and looking for a 40"+ bull I'd hunt up top through the entrance by the ski resort.  There aren't as many openings but that's where the bigger bulls will be.  If you can find an experienced caller to go along with you you shouldn't have any problem bringing one in during the rut up there.

I did go up to the Ski lodge and spent some time there.  We saw a lot of tracks, but there not as many openings. This area did look like there would be bears there. Will probably spend some time there.

I found my first rut pit of the season last night, and he also shred some velvet and worked over a  willow bush pretty harsh.  Pretty early for the average moose, but maybe this guy isn't average.

It only gets worse from here on out, trust me.  Seems a little early for a rut pit.

Seemed way early.  Weather is pretty fall like though, (or was).  Nothing like seeing your breath in the morning........

Was up above Naches this morning.  Hear three diffrend bull elk bugeling...  Seems early to me too.  Must be global warming.  Or we are in for one heck of a winter.  Or they are just being men....  always hopeful that an opportunity will present itself....

Yeah, I heard three bugles last night as well, about 1 am.   Its almost time.   I heard one shedding velvet right before dark.  He was working it pretty good.

I've heard elk bugle in July above Pierre Lake campground. Hotter then hell out. I think sometimes it just feels good to bugle.

Just seems really early to me to have all this going on, I mean its only August 15th.

Its not that early for elk, but its a solid month early for moose action, unless you are in Alaska, and it would be early up there too.
