So here's one for ya...
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:15:45 PM »
Got a call from an old neighbor who now lives out in North Bend area...has a problem with a bear coming to the house every other night.

Got into the chicken coop, killed 11 chickens/ ate all the feed...got into the garbage (with a fence around it), etc...

they called Fish and Game...was told to file another report if it continues...but they got the impression it wasnt a priority...so they gave me a call.

The question is...

This bear is coming into the area, not due to baiting, BUT due to food that is available (even if it is fenced in).

Would this be legal to hunt (disregard if fire arm restrictions are in effect, etc)? I really dont want to hunt a bear by there, but we can get two tags and the bear is obviously an issue.

Thoughts?

I would call the game officer and get an answer,if it were me and a bear was killing my chickens I would harvest it tag it and feed the left overs to the surviving chickens..

I'd call them, but don't give specifics about your address.  If push comes to shove and it's SSS, you wouldn't want them to stop by just to check up on things and find a new throw rug!

How about hooking up with a disabled hunter that can't hit the high country?

Dont have my spot set up for Sunday....have to go to a fam reunion.. ;(

Might get an evening hunt next week, but more than likely wont till a little later in season.

Bringing along some kid wouldnt be a bad idea....I'd really only take it as a favor to the neighbor, I really would rather call one in, or be out in the wilds.

yeah i would make sure to get rid of it. if it is that tame and use to coming into the yard etc. next it might grab a small kid. i would take care of it. you can call the officer and talk to them and see what they say but because of it killing stock, you should be able to kill it without any problems. there is local guy that had a coug come in and kill 2 turkeys at his house. when got home to see one ate and another burried so he got his rifle and sat and weighted when kitty came back that was game over. the cat was dead within a few feet of the dead turkey. the fish and wildlife officer came out and saw everything and took the cat if i remeber right.

A bear not afraid of people/homes is one to get rid of.

So.. Find some ground near that you can call it in from. Hmm.. Chicken in distress call?  :chuckle: Tomcat calling for a mate?

Ya, the guy has three small kids, which is an obvious concern....it has to go one way or the other. I checked it out on google earth...I need to find out about any firearm restrictions. Could be a bow situation. I think I will just stand on top of the dang chicken coop if it comes down to it.

I mean he has three kids right, something is attracting that bear, sounds like you have three oportunities   :dunno:

I am aiming for sometime next week...perhaps next weekend. I have to take a look at the area and see...

Got to call the Dept too, to get a blessing.

Maybe I will get the hide tanned so they have something to show for it...and I can grease the wheels for some of the elk that eat their property up... ;)

Youngster or disabled hunter.  just make sure its a REAL disabled hunter, wounded warrior (alot of these boys around if you know who to contact), etc.  I have talk to to many "disabled hunters" that had a 60lb pack on thier back and all supplies for a 15 mile hike into elk camp to make me vomit.

As long as it is legally harvested, WDFW is very happy to have nuisance game tagged.  If it can be done discretely w/o pissing off neighbors or getting on TV, even better.  Been there, done that.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Thats my biggest concern. I dont want to bother the neighbors at all, and sure as hell am going to avoid any TV action. (aside from a clean legal kill)

i've got the same issue in my own yard. this is the second year that this bear has been tearing up fruit trees and trash cans in our neigborhood and he no longer runs from cars. the game dept. says that they don't have a trap available and that we should play loud music to keep him away - brilliant. i'm in a firearm restricted area so i will be in a tree stand in my back yard with a bow every night after work. i've got no qualms about wackin the bugger and i've got most of my neighbors blessings already. i would rather take a bear in the wild, but this one has got to go. he is out mostly at night though and i'm not sure i can catch him during legal shooting light.

he seems partial to coffee grounds   :dunno: - could be an interesting flavor  :chuckle:
