Yes you can hunt both. Your archery "permit" is simply a stamp that is sold to allow you to hunt on your general deer/elk tag during the archery season. Montana does not make you choose your weapon like Washington does. But if you do not fill your general deer/elk tag during the archery season, then you just wait until rifle season and pick up a gun and go hunting.
Thank You for this thread - I had never considered that as an option. I will be buying an archery permit should I fill the multi-season elk or deer tag. Any limitation on when you can buy the archery permit? Do I have to buy it before the season starts or can I do it mid-way through the archery season?

They're available at most Sporting Goods stores. You'll need to show an old (or current) hunting license that was for an archery season (from any State); otherwise, you have to complete a MT Archery Course.
