need knife suggestion
« on: July 30, 2010, 08:54:38 AM »
Looking for a new knife for the sole purpose of field dressing deer/elk.  Trying to keep the cost under $30 but still want good quality.  I know nothing of knives so, I'm not sure if this is doable or not.  I would also like to be able to walk into a store and buy it rather than online.

Thanks

Will the Havalon go through bone and joints?  They look sharp but not that stiff.

Sorry, I said field dressing but what I ment was the "Bone out" method.

Not firm on that price, just hoping.  I have a Gerber Gator that I got for about $30 that I use for work.  It's a good work knife, just don't know how it'd do on an animal

Most knives will work but what I have learned through my years is on stuff like that is to spend a little more for quality. You get what you pay for. My dad has an Old,old Uncle henrys and that knife out lasted 3 of my cheaper grade knives. It's still the go to knife....always in the pack.

Also, to keep the cost down always look at garage sales. You might find a damn good knife for 5 bucks.

My father found the Uncle Henrys While out deer hunting. It was still in what was left of the sheath lying in the pine needles. That was more then 20 years ago.  :)
Just one more day

Bucks are ok a little more work to sharpen. If I was looking for a new knife I would try to budget around $100 for a blue box(American made)Benchmade.

Firm believer in you get what you pay for. Knives are no different. I swear by Knives of Alaska. Ain't cheap by any means but I own two sets. I have the ones with the rubber grips. Awesome knives with a very loyal following. Save up a few bucks and buy a set.
