Project Ultra Mag
« on: July 30, 2010, 11:10:06 AM »
So, I started a rifle quest called "Project Ultra mag"

The quest started because I really wanted to shoot the 190 or 210 Berger VLD hunting bullet because of its BC.. however, my 300 weatherby hates any bullet with a Secant Ogive.. just tosses em all over the place. ALSO, I wanted a rifle I could take ANYWHERE.. my Weatherby is very pretty and I am not one of those people that can live with noticeable blemishes so.. after asking the board, I was guided to this exact gun:

http://remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-xcr-ii-camo-rmef.aspx

So I got it! Trynite finish, stainless steel, classic 700, 26" barrel and MOST important.. it shoots the 210 Bergers less than 1" MOA.. and with a BC of .063 and 3000+fps.. this makes it a potent shooter.

BUT.. The reason I have not purchased any remingtons in the past is because of their synthetic stocks.. quite frankly unless you buy the higher line up of rifles, their stocks suck.. not much more than a beebee gun stock...total plastic.

So.. I got a new stock: HS Precision from Stockys seen here:

http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-392/thumbhole-stock-aluminum-bedded/Detail

Next:

I plan on upgrading the scope... I am attending a precision rifle course in the next few weeks at Firearm Academy of Seattle and decided to go with this bad boy:

http://www.nikonhunting.com/riflescopes-monarch_x-monarch_x_2.5-10x44.html ... should be here in a day or two.

So.. I only have a few other things I think I should do:

Cryo the barrel.. as this is more of a sporter barrel, This should add some life to this fire burner.
Upgrade the recoil pad.. it came with an "uncle Mike's ultra mag recoil pad" .. I have never heard of these and while it is thick, it seems awefully hard and although WAY better than the recoil pad that came from the remington stock, perhaps I should go with a Limbsaver.

Thoughts? Ideas? Love to hear it. BTW.. here is a pic:

Very nice rifle.  I am in the process of building one but it will be a 7mm.  I really like the stock did it come painted that way or did you paint it?  Have you done any trigger work on it yet?

Hey Coop!

The stock is a custom color from HS Presicion called Grassland. So worth it. Have done nothing to the trigger because the it came with the X mark Pro Trigger system.. it really is awsome. it just snaps or "breaks like glass." They are not lying about that.

Goo luck with your 7mm!

Love my Ultra mag, also a Model 700 in remington......

I researched this gun for two years before I bought one back in 2005. Best gun I have ever owned. The stocks are cheapy, but i just wanted a gun to go into the woods and not have to worry about it being pretty..... I beat the crap out of mine.......and to this day it has not let me down once......

The 300 ultra is not for the wimps, or weak.......THA DAMN THING IS A MULE........ But you feel nothing when you are shooting at an animal.........

MDGrand, what is the weight of the HS stock you put on your gun?  I shoot a Sendero in 300RUM and was wanting to go thumbhole.  I wouldn't imagine it being any heavier than the HS I have on there already.

Hi MtnMuley.. did your stock come strait from Remington? Because those are Bell and Carlson stocks and are quite good as is!

HS precision stock is 2.7 lbs.

Mine's an HS and is a great stock.  I just prefer thumbhole for off-hand shots.  Thanks for the info MDG.
300mag, if I do get a new stock I will let you know then.  Doubt it will happen before this upcoming season, as the gun is shooting good and I'd hate mess up a good thing.

I have a 700 lss that I put into a mcmillian stock. I would be a bit nervous with too soft of a pad on a gun that light. I had a christensen arms 300rum sitting in a older style B&C stock with a soft pad. the eye relief on the 4-12 av swaro was not enough for my buddy, he cut the snot out of his eye. I think a decellerator is about the right durometer for the recoil velocity of the rums.

After the fireamrms course let us know what you think of that stock.
I had that same stock on a unbrakes 338-378. The rifle kicked hard but the recoil seemed worse in that stock.
The 338-378 is back in that HS stock but now the rifle wears a brake.
