The DNR closed roads here allow anything that can get past the gates to use the roads. ... if you can drive around it or under it with a quad or a bike, then you can run State roads unless they're specifically posted.

Can I ask how you learned this information?

It would seem that they would place signage and a single metal post or two in the middle of the road if this was the case. I have never heard of this principal, for state land...

I know on some DNR land you can actually take a motorcycle around the gates if not specifically posted "no motorized vehicles", but I would not want to chance it. You know people tear down signs.

who knows if he even used to 4 wheeler to recover the bear, and how do you all know if he can or cant drive around gates in the area the picture was taken.  Give the guy the benifit of the doubt, we havent even heard from him yet. :)

more than likely it is a pic of his new toy so i am not going to jump to any conclusions. Besides i am not the gate police anyway. Looks like a very nice bear I hope that it is all that you are bragging about. Cant wait until i hear the final score.

I don't think anyone was questioning the hunter, just asking for clarification since the poster felt like posting this information, people will ask questions. In my experience, a closed gate of any kind was meant to keep vehicles out, I'm not sure of any other reason to have a gate unless it was a cattle gate, in which case, the DNR uses barbed wire gates for that. It is a great bear, but unless we hear from the hunter I guess we'll never know the full story of how it was taken. Again, that wouldn't necessarily be important, other than the fact that is was said he spotted the bear and shot it not far off his porch, then apparently took a 4 wheeler to a DNR/ forest service road gate?  Just analyzing the fact's given. Perhaps it is a private gated road? Great bear, wish we could hear from the hunter.

Ya know, even though I read and moved this topic, I just realized that the title says "world record". I agree that it is a large headed bear (the guy in the pic looks to be a big boy as well) but if it is as large as is stated then why isn't it scored already?

That's a great bear! As far as the quad, there's nothing wrong with a quad on a trailer. That's like saying " There's a car in the picture, I hope he didn't shoot it out of the window." Give him a break unless there's something blatantly illegal in the photo.

I am guilty of assuming someone did the wrong thing sometimes.... I usually like to try and side with the idea that people are doing things ethically and legally correct though. Great looking bear.

I don't know Jacob at all but I know that road well and have ridden my motorcycle on it many times.  USFS roads are currently open unless otherwise posted no mater if they are gated or not.  This road is not posted.

Nice bear!  I happen to know the current state record holder.  It would be interesting to hear the age of Jacob's bear.  I believe the current record was something like 19yrs.!

OK, nough's enough. I know that gate, I've hunted there and yes it is off limits to quads and I further do not think that someone would drag a quad 20 miles up a winding highway to a USFS gate, BACK up a quad trailer to sit and pose with a quad for a photo session, give some credit for having a brain. I do however think that folks that would blast away at deer with a .22 caliber from 135 yds. would also drive a quad out of bounds. Until the hunter comes on and explains the hunt and photos for himself I pretty much don't put any credence in 2nd hand information on a new world record, or much else with this post.

Is that the bears age or the lenght of current record?

d-man, i think i might on the same page with you now. After putting two and two together i realized that we may be dealing with some shady characters here. Why would someone brag about shooting a deer with a 22 anyway. That is just stupid and ignorant. Then that other new guy who posted sliders pics(which i do think was an accident) posts pictures of forked horns and spikes. What is the world coming to.  :dunno:  :iamwithstupid:

Iceman,

I emailed the local DNR office and asked about some recent closures on a certain network of roads. The local head guy e-mailed back and said I was free to walk or cycle it, but to be aware that there would be motorcycles and quads and etc in there because it wasn't closed to them. They had closed the gates to keep people from stealing timber. He very specifically told me it was open to ATV's and Motorcycles, and said it would be posted closed if it was.
