It totally depends on the person behind the weapon, the weapon, and the conditions.  As a "general" rule, yes 550 is probably too long a shot.  But by no means can you throw a blanket over it and state that shooting at an animal at that distance is unethical/irresponsible

I agree that it depends on the person, the weapon and conditions, but I do think you can throw a general blanket statement that it is irresponsible. It is a shot that should only be made by a handful of hunters under ideal conditions.

I totally agree with BTKR. This year in Montana, I was presented with easily the longest shot ever at what would have easily been my nicest muley ever @ 400yds. It was in the heavy snow and low clouds with wind and I opted to pass, don't regret it at all. I would have been concerned about trying it even in fair weather, though I've target shot accurately to 300 yds many times. Bottom line, I have met in person, maybe 2-3 guys that should be taking a 550 yard shot on any animal and have seen many "professional" hunter's on TV pass on shots at good bucks, with shot opportunities much less distance than 550 yards.

I agree that it depends on the person, the weapon and conditions, but I do think you can throw a general blanket statement that it is irresponsible. It is a shot that should only be made by a handful of hunters under ideal conditions.

Ok, I'll call a spade a spade on this one.  Doesn't look like anyone else is going to.  Thats a damn nice bear, but it in no way looks like a 24" bear to me.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Ok this is Master-Tracker killing a BEAR for you at 555 yards!

known Land mark from position 800 yards and enemy engagement mark and location coordinates point for 0311's and 0811's and gps coordinates for air support.

Known enemy spotted and is in the engagement of contact zone.

Eye and or laser mark of reference is called in at 700 yards.

Told to engage on known enemy target.

known average size of this target is from top of shoulder to bottom of foot is 31-40 inch's.   "it looks bigger than avearge"

I use 40 inch's to mil this enemy in at.

40 divided 12=3.33x1000=3330 divided 4.88 mil = 682 yards!

enemy is 3330 at 6 miles= 555 yards!

I'm shooting a .338 Lapua Magnum 250 Grain Sierra MatchKing Hollow point.

Weather condition's 79 degrees Humidity 57% Wind 1.7 mph due sse Elevation 900 feet

Rifle is 9.00 moa at 550 yards shooter adjustment for .25 moa

9.25 MOA is 37 clicks elevation

At 550 yards wind is 1.7 MOA shooter adjustment for .05 to 1.75 for 7 clicks left.
Wind check is made for other wind drifts none are found.

Hold breath release breath wait 2 tenths of a second......Fire

Enemy target was eliminated

Oh my God, I have been watching and keeping quiet on this one but now I have to Laugh my A-- off and that is a lot of laughing. I'm dumbfounded by what I just read. I wish a moderator would make it disappear

and he sure doesn't look like a marine sniper.

I'm the one that wrote that and i was useing a weapon I know. And i was mocking as if i had killed it at such along range since people were saying that it is to far to make a shot! Also he did not use a Lupa but a .300 rum and the rum holds better than a lupa at 500 yards anyway.

Wow!  It didn't take long for this site to turn into another MM.  Did I miss something?  Ducks in the high country and deer with a .22?  I missed that I guess?

This Jacob probably doesn't even know his picture is on here and he's being persecuted for shooting a bear at a range that is too far and for riding his ATV on a road that nobody even knows where it's at or if it's state, federal or private.

Dman, if you know this road, then you know it's not posted and people ride behind it all the time.

lol
I don't know but I am about done with this thread. It is a great bear, but the rest is all hear say and until I see a score sheet I am guessing 20.5 inches tops.

MasterTracker - why would you ask a guy for his DD214 then remove it and change the whole post?
