Lets Hear Your Opening Day Stories
« on: August 01, 2010, 05:00:31 PM »
Mine was not what I expected. Scouted the area last month and found an amazing amount of Scat that was from pretty fresh to Oh Crap is he beside me. Found a couple areas on the way in that looked like they would be FULL of Berries. The season was looking to be a good one.

Opening Day....Started by getting out there around noon on Sat, just in case someone else wanted the spot and set up. Took my truck to check out another area, then ate and sat around BSng. Realized that it was 1130 and I knew 330 was coming real quick. Tried to sleep....TRIED. Got up, dressed and ready to go. Realized the fog was not my friend today, so we waited for about 30 mins. Went in and got to one spot where we found ONE berry (no scat). On the way to the next spot we found nice track and 2 piles of scat. Between first and second area we saw probably 25 berries. NOT LOOKING GOOD. We got into position and I began my first run at calling with my DA1. I thought I was doing it wrong and I was glad I had no experienced caller around to hear (I hope). Then a damn Yote comes flying out of the tree line making a B-line towards me. Then he saw my partner....Damn thing turned and was in the tree line without even touching the ground  :chuckle:. That was the ONLY excitement I had for the day. I am disappointed, but still happy I got out, and the season is long. I am hoping next time the berries will be ready.

That is all I have for my opening day, kind of uneventful, but it is still early.

Disapointed?

That is more action then most will have, including myself. At least you didn't get hosed by brushpickers.  :bash:

Your not the only one who didnt sleep much last night!
I just got back from doing a couple walkins behind a few gates and didnt find any new sign. I walked in this one gate for the first time and found where the bear badly destroyed an area with all the bark peels. At one Y in the road he probably killed 2 dozen trees in a 50 foot area. There was one tree where I swear the bear literally chewed off every piece of bark on the entire tree, and the tree is like 80 feet tall! All the sign was probably a month old though. The only game I saw today was 2 bunnies. Oh well, lots of time left in the season.

I drove home from Moses Lake, wishing I was bear hunting.... :chuckle: :bash: :'(

Calling in a yote, you did something right. Not a bad first day. Keep at it.

Mine was full of adventure  :) I realized last night about 6pm today was the opener.   Threw a bunch of stuff in the truck, grabbed a buddy, drove 3 hours, finally got to bed (a tarp, and a sleeping bad) about 11pm, slept on a rock  . Got up at 4:30 and got up to where I wanted to go and saw a crap load of elk, then I saw more elk, then I saw a pretty damn big bull  :), then some cows and calves, and then I saw a few elk  :bash:

If I didn't have scope covers, or shanevg had a round in the chamber, we would have a bear down... at 5 yards.   :bash:   Oh well, got the rest of season, had a great day out.

I rode from Polsen camp all the way up to the east for Rd. today. Thats my longest bike ride so far and my legs/but feel it. I seen a few grouse, 8 deer but no horns. I called in a few spots but the only thing that came in were ravens, hawks, and vaulters. Not much out there for berries and I didn't see much for scat..

Yeah and found a dead skunk. Did a lazy 1 1/2 look though, my legs are burning from this morning.  I almost want to hang up my gun the rest of the season :'(  Hopefully I can get back out there on tuesday fresh. :)

No bears for me today but lots of hunters.  The spot I hunt is getting a major cut again on the top end.  I did hear some shots in the distance from some of the close by gates.

Slept in today til my dad called and wanted to go on a hike into an area we wanted to check out for deer.  Climbed some serious elevation and got to where we wanted to start looking and came face to face with a little bear.  He bolted straight up a tree and sat there looking at us til we left him alone.  Jet black with a huge white patch.  Problem was he weighed maybe 80lbs and neither of us were packing!!! lol
