elk rubs.?
« on: August 02, 2010, 10:56:41 PM »
Well i was scouting just south of mt. helens and some areas above cat creek off rd 21. My partner and i saw some pine trees approx. 9 feet tall all tore up obviously by horns but they were tore up from the ground to about 4 feet...really wondering if that would be too short to be a bull rub or a deer..? .. also found some canine looking poop that was full of brownish hair ... maybe a coyote..? Thanks for any input... just trying to get back into the game....

I would bet an elk.  I dont see very many deer rubs that high up, and that area isnt known for monster deer either.

Sounds like it also could be a bear.  How old did it look ? The tree will die and I know hound & bait hunters who used to glass over areas from a high vantage point and look for reddish patches which indicate a bear is working an area of generally 10-15 year old jack firs.  They girdle the tree eating the tender cambium layers.  Porcupines will do this as well !

the rub looked fresh prob a month went by ... the sap was still clear and soft... there were about 3 trees in a 20 foot area that were tore up like that.... trees were still alive... at base was stuff that looked like brown sugar so i was hoping it was old velvet...

Lots of elk in that area, That would be my guess.
