44 mag for bear?
« on: August 03, 2010, 01:42:23 PM »
Son wants to shoot a bear with a 44 mag RIFLE.  What slugs should he be using?  What max range?

I'd be confortable using the 240gr Hornady loads with the XTP bullet, limit shots to no more than 50 yards.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

use a soild bullet like goldtip i run a lot of horn xtps in my handguns 125-158 in my 357 mags and 250 grains in my 454 casull. they will do the job. stay away from just lead bullets they can work but with a bear and solid bone  :bdid: won't get the penitration i like to see with a handgun bullet. barnes is one of my fave to use in a handgun for hunting. i would say with the 44 in a rifle and he is confident with it and shoots it well 80 yards or less :twocents: my 454 i would feel fine to 100 on a bear but not more :twocents:

I have a ruger m77 in .44mag. Bushnell 3x9 scope, 240grn xtp's. It is my main hunting gun in the area where we go.  It drives tac's at 100yds. 2 years ago i got lucky and a big 5pt stepped out about 40 yds in front of me and i got a good double lung shot on him.  He went about 50 yds and dropped in his tracks.  The exit hole was big enuff you could stick your hand in!
