Salt Licks???

I have a game camera and wanted to start using it to find deer on Ft. Rucker.  So I've seen pics of "salt licks" and where the animals have dug the ground alot.  So my question is.....

How do you establish a salt lick site.  Such as how much salt, what kind of salt etc.  Do you layer it with salt, dirt salt etc.  or do you just dump a bunch of it on the ground.  Any advice or help would be appreciated thanks.  Oh also where do you put it.  IE in what type of terrain or habitat do you put it where you know animals will eventually come across it.

sheep salt with celenium , you can find it at a feed store. block form lasts longer .

I use the sheep salt with solenium as well.Works great!!. Not too expensive. Doesnt matter if you use the block or the loose stuff. I use both at my site. If you use the loose youll have to keep adding every two weeks or so. With the loose, I like to spread it into the dirt and the critters will eat it up like candy.

I just by bags of loose salt, trace minreal and selenium. about $8 a 50lb sack. I dump 1 a year in the same spot.

the germans religously use large red salt cubes.  I've only ever seen a deer lick em once. there are so many of em in the woolds around here that the deer must think they are a naturally occuring plant or something.

What about for elk any luck with this on them?

my uncle uses salt licks and trophy rocks and it brings in the elk pretty succesfully. he places it near a water source and once they lick into the salt for awhile they need a drink so they drink then come back to the lick and repeat.

other people are right though. one salt lick will destroy about a 10foot radius around it from trampling animals and the salt seaping into the soil.

They sure do at my place. They will even dig into the dirt where the salt has been.......2 feet wide and a foot deep.

I always put a salt lick next to an established game trail and in a good place for a treestand. Last one I set out had animals on it the very next day and within a few days had elk, mule deer, whitetail and moose on it - maybe more since something unplugged my battery about 2weeks into the soak.

Here are a few pics from throughout the soak - camera was set on the 3rd and first deer was in on the 4th - last pic on the 19th (When it was unplugged ) camera sat for another week and a half before checking it. By then it was really beat down around the block.

behind the camera is a junction where 3 trails intersect and I have a tree stand off to the left.

I have mine out soaking all year and haven't got one like your first pic yet  what kind of salt is that your using?

Those are mineral trace blocks but you don't have to pack some 20 lb block out there just buy the smaller one as they work just as good.

That is correct - it is a mineral trace block. I have another setup with a regular white salt block but it has been in use for a few years now.

It is actually a 50lb Skyval, but it is a 6 hour trip and a 4 mile hike into this setup so it is worth it to pack in the bigger block once and just leave it. And they are less than $10 at the local feed store.

Hey thanks for the tips guys. I'm gonna concentrate on hogs until 1 September. After that I will heed your advice and put out some salt and see what animals are in each area I plan to hunt in preparation to the 15 October opener of Archery deer season. Ill post some pics if I get pics of anything interesting.

Trace mineral salt with salenium pour the bags on logs, stumps and the ground. Good luck

This my experience. I've put them out in August and the deer hardly touch them. But the spring, look out, they will dig a hole for the salt.

That's good because there's not a whole lot of Mule Deer in SE Alabama.  Guess I'll concentrate on the Whitetails this year.

SE Alabama?  Did I miss something? How the heck would I know where your at. Never been to Fort Ruckers but now I assume it's in Alabama. I don't believe I said anything about Mule Deer...........................................Good Luck

Someone was saying that the Mule Deer stop hitting the salt licks around August or September.  You said that the Whitetails around your place hit it all year round.  My comment about "Not many mule deer" in Alabama was just kidding around since there aren't any Mule Deer for 1,000 miles.  It was my fun way of saying that I'm glad to hear that Whitetails hit your salt licks all year round since that is the only deer I can hunt in Alabama.
