kahaltus or huckleberry
« on: August 05, 2010, 11:41:29 AM »
I drew three special hunt tags.  Since WDFW won't let me take 2 deer...which I don't understand...a choice needs to be made.  Do I go to the huckleberry  area and pull out a antlerless whitetail???   or do I try and figure out where on the Kahaltus public acre I can find any buck that is close enough for my knight muzzy to smoke?  I know huckleberry inside and out...I know kahaltus zip zero nada.
I do have king salmon and crab offerings to the people of the kahaltus area.  But being from the coast...I am looked down upon as an outsider...thus the seafood to chum the waters.  The third special hunt is for a cow elk which is a go end of topic.  What would you do???

It really depends if you are meat hunting or want a chance at a buck. If you are in it just for the meat then go Huckleberry and get yourself and nice fat doe. I know that area really well too and could probably go find a doe the first morning but finding a mature buck is a different story.

What a dilemma, I guess it all depends on whether you would settle for any buck or not...
IMO, if it was just for the meat, I would get a doe, if you want to try for a good (4pt+) buck, well you get the idea.
If you have the time to get down there and meet the locals, put a sign up at the local feed store, buy a few pitchers of beer at the local tavern, etc..
Call the Bio. and ask if they receive "damage complaints" and if he can suggest any major landowners.
According to harvest reports, they do get some nice deer out of there, but mostly modern firearm, and probably mostly locals to begin with...
Don't take this personal, but I really wonder why you applied w/o having some sort of game-plan?
The antlerless in Huckleberry seems like a gimme, same for the cow tag (Manastash), but "any Buck" in an area you have no place to hunt (yet) ?
So I guess my answer would be Huckleberry  :twocents:, but what special permit did you draw ?
I am not sure, but I think the antlerless runs Sept, 25th-Oct. 3rd, and your buck permit is Oct. 3rd-9th.... :dunno:
Seems like there wouldn't be a conflict other than with your cow permit....... :dunno:
