Wood stove for spike tent
« on: August 09, 2010, 08:00:23 AM »
I'm looking for some wood stove advise for my little 12' spike tent. It has a 4" vent and can be made 5" if need be. I dont want anything fancy but dont want something thats problematic. Ive seen them anywhere from 2-5 hundred bucks. This would be just for heat and if possible warming food. Can anyone suggest a smallish unit that has served well and not leaked ash everywhere.

Thank You

I'm assuming you don't want a non-airtight stove that breaks down for packing.  It is cheapest to make your own out of galvanized sheet and rivets, then do several burns outside the shelter to burn off the zinc.  Other than that, Kni-Co makes a well-crafted packer stove that costs a bit over $100.  Four-dog stoves have a very good reputation but are spendy.

Cylinder stoves draw much better than box stoves.  Those are easy to make as well from a small stainless container from WalMart or Bed, Bath, Beyond type places.

I have a Kozy Kamp brand stove that breaks down for packing.  It's about 10-11" square and about 2 feet long.  It was never used (bought a camper shortly after).  Comes with some pipe and a carrying case.  PM me if you're interested.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

Thanks for the replies and offers. I guess I'm going to be stuck with cabela's. The wife wants to go out this weekend, no way she's going without heat. I think I'm just going to get the Cabelas barrell and then maybe find a packable for elk season as time permits.

Thanks
