for a brush gun it is hard to beat a pistol. if I were you I would be thinking something I could shoot a lot and be mr. confidence with.....223 in a bolt gun to keep up on your fundamentals of riflemanship or a slick handling pistol like the 329 pd.....or be like me and buy both.

sice you want a lever gun go with a BLR in 308 or 257

Marlin makes some good lever guns in pistol cartridges, such as 44 mag or 357.  They are good for home defense, deer, and are a kick to shoot.  You can also shoot the lighter loads (44, 38 special) just like if you had a revolver.  Lever action 44 mag is hard to beat when it comes to reliable home defense guns.

If you don't go lever, an AR would be my pick.
