BROWNSVILLE, Ore. -- A southern Willamette Valley sheep farmer said a licensed trapper killed five cougars on her property in the past two months -- an occurrence she said is unprecedented.
Cathy Stepp raises sheep near Brownsville on property her family has owned for 50 years.
Stepp said a trapper who works with Linn County Animal Control came to her farm several times with his dogs and killed the five cougars. Last week, she said, a sixth cat killed another sheep.
That cougar hasn't yet been caught, she said.
Stepp said she and her son now walk their property with guns. They fear the cougars will eventually attack people.
"It's pretty scary. It's real scary. You can't even go outside without looking behind your back or watching or whatever to see if something's going on or if there's a cat around," Stepp said.
The problem has worsened since the state passed a law in the 1990s banning people from hunting cougars with dogs, Stepp said.
