Too hot for hunting?
« on: August 15, 2010, 05:17:21 PM »
Not if your an addict.   :chuckle:  Went out and had a great time despite the heat.  Had my chance at a 150lbs scruffy looking bear at about 20 yards.  The wind was blowing pretty hard and was covering the sound of me walking on the gravel.  When I stopped to take a breather I hear a twig snap.  Look over and there was a bear walking right towards me, had no clue I was there.  I raised the rifle, pulled the trigger and heard the dreaded "click".   :bash: :bash: :bash: My dad let me borrow his 7mm mag BAR that I had not shot in quite a while.  I think when I loaded it in the morning I didnt let the handle go when it was all the way back and it didnt close all the way.  The bear stood up, saw me and took off.   :bash: :bash: :bash:  Makes you want to just give up.  :'( :'( :'(

I hiked about 10 miles over the weekend which is not a lot for some of you but with being way out of shape, the heat and a loaded day pack it about killed me.  The woods were were corn flake dry and the meadows had very few berries and even less animals.  Didnt see any deer or elk the entire weekend, not even any fresh sign.  Very uncommon for the area.  :dunno:

Oh well I still had fun, did a lot of calling with no takers except for birds.
One of the few semi open areas I did some calling at.

Did see some bear sign so I know they are there.  Maybe I will go back when it is cooler.

Got a small coyote while at the car.  It was walking down the road with two others.  All I had handy was the 44mag so I let her have it at about 30 yards.  My ears are still ringing.  Forgot how loud that thing is.  Didnt realize that it was a pup until I got up to it.   :dunno:  Hope you all had better luck and hope I can walk tomorrow.  :chuckle:

Good shot with the 44.  I saw two pups like that while out bear hunting a couple days ago.

It was almost a miss.  I was aiming for the shoulder and hit it the top of the neck.  Not that far off for how small the coyote was though.
