520 550 560
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:10:17 PM »
as i have said before this is the first year back to the wet side in a long time have previously hunted 520 but am getting the impression that it is expected to prettymuch shut down to any camping and very limited access, what i am looking for is any information on somewhat primitive camping (tow trailer) not really afraid of a scratch or two, looking for information on access in 560 or 550 units road conditions and whatever else one would need to know
kinda late in the game for switching up with not much time to do any real scouting :bash: just kinda hoping i can get a good kick in the butt in the right direction and i certainly would not turn down any tips
Any help would really be appreciated
   Thanks in advance

Wey.co owns the majority of land in those units. I am assuming you are talking about early archery? The gate will be closed in the 520,550 and most of the 560. You cannot camp in the 520 or the 550 at all.A lot of guys camp and the intersection where highway 505 and 504 meet,it is a small area and gets crowed. The 560 is the toutle and you cannot hunt elk in there without a special permit. There is some state land that you can camp on up the 4250 but just pay attention to the signs. Hope this helps.

Quick correction.  The 560 is the Lewis River unit (the Toutle is the 556).  A lot of the 560 is in Gifford Pinchot and you should be able to camp most anywhere.  Just make sure you are within the park boundries.

Don't you mean the National Forest boundary, and not the Mt St. Helens National Monument boundary?

There are a lot of places to camp down in 560. If you go on the Gifford Pinchot Forest website you can find all the campgrounds and road conditions and closures. We go down there every year, I have seen a lot of guys get some nice elk out of there but have never been so lucky myself, hopefully this year.
