Roads closed 342
« on: August 20, 2010, 01:07:37 AM »
So last year we're camped in the same spot we've been in for 10 years.  In the same spot my dad started hunting with my grandpa in the late 50s. Some other gentlement camp about 100 yards away.  They've been camping there for something like 17 years.

Warden - nice guy - comes by and tells us we're camped a mile off the green dot road.  Huh? Turns out Boise Cascade sold parts of their land to another timber company which then, among other things, enrolled it with the state into the green dot program, and between the state and the successor timber company they closed the road.  We've been discussing the road with DNR since the end of last season.  Doesn't look like they plan to open it.  Looks like we need to find a new place to for elk camp this year.   :(

I'm just venting a little...

memories before the change.

While I'm completely sympathetic to your situation and I hope that you find a spot as good as the one you were in (must've been good, you've been coming back for a long time) I'm glad that they are closing some roads in the area.  There are too many of them, anyway.

That being said, it sucks that it happened to be where you camped - I hope you are able to locate another spot that will be good for another 50 years.

I'm on the opposite side. Although I won't argue that road closures will stop some problems and make it harder for road hunters, I'm one of those road hunters not by choice and road closures mean less and less ground open to me.

Kirk - cow canyon specifically, but also rocky prairie road is closed. There are several other roads in that area that used to be through Boise Cascade property that are also closed now; off-shoots of cow canyon and rocky prairie.  Many people were still driving them last year, and they were not gated, but there were closed.  DNR told us that they plan to gate the cow canyon area but are working to reopen and improve rocky prairie.

Halflife - yeah I'm not pissed about it.  I'm just bummed I have to find a new place to camp.  However if they are going to close the road I think they should gate them. Lack of a green dot on a stick is insufficient. Especially if it was previously a very frequently traveled road.

Sako - I feel for you. I'm supportive of giving special access to disabled hunters.

4 years ago in the 4 corners area of the colockum they closed the access to our family's campground of 35 years. There was a green dot on this road and when DNR logged-they put in a tank trap and it was all over. except they left the green dot at the bottom.

Question, Does DNR's green dot system have control inside the US Nation Forest?

Question, Does DNR's green dot system have control inside the US Nation Forest?

The green dot stuff is new to me (been out of state 20 yrs).  What I was able to decipher from the Big Game regs is yes.  It's a cooperative thing between the agencies to give the wildlife a break from vehicle traffic, especially in areas with a lot of roads.

I may be wrong, if I am someone please chime in and set me straight.

The Green Dot system is not a DNR thing, it's administered by the WDFW. So yes, if it's a Green Dot area then it applies to all land inside that area, whether it is National Forest, DNR, WDFW, or some other private landowner.

From what I understand, the green dot roads only exist inside Wildlife Areas, roads on USFS are all open unless otherwise noted.

Not all State land is manged by green dot road system. Only specific areas, like wildlife area.
When in a "Green Dot" area, all roads are closed unless market with a "Green Dot" on a side road marker. Some roads may be have a Red Dot to show closed but they are not required to mark the roads that are closed.

green dot occurs on state land, not federal, ie. forest service.
