rino problem?

The compass isnt working on my 530? Anybody have this problem? So the whole mapping isnt working correctly, Its not the calibration, also it wont calibrate?? Damn thing hopefully maybe somebody knows what i pushed that shouldnt have

No battery is fully charged, my shop has a metal roof and im thinking it may be throwing my rino off, it seems to work when im away from my house. it acted wierd at my cousins and his shop had a metal roof and at my buds with a metal roof, I think you need to be away from any type of metal siding or roofing or it interfers with the signal. Anybody else find this out? When its acting up the compass doesnt work at all! Is there some sort of adjustment to the sensitivity i can make Also when im driving in my truck it seems to work fine but when i stop it does the same thing sometimes where north is actually pointing south! Just when i stop though, idk

Go to the Garmin website, plug your 530 into the USB and update the software. See if that helps. ??

Isn't there a button on the front that if you hold it down it turns the compass off?  I'd tell you which one, but I lost my 530 this summer.  I kept turning it off in my pocket.  Same thing with the volume, hold a button down, and it goes to mute.  Worth a try...

When I got my 530, I put it side by side with a compass and got different readings; darn near opposite the actual direction by 90 degrees. So if I was facing south, the compass would give me east the Rino west (a bit of exageration for explanation purposes). When I would seperate them I they would still be a bit off but not by more than 10 degrees or so.

When I stepped out into the yard, out from under the metal portico over the deck, they started to get closer but were still opposite the actual bearing but by half of what it was under the metal roof. If I set the compass on the ground and held the Rino at waist high in the middle of the back yard, they were darn near spot on after doing a calibration on the Rino. Thankfully, I was also able to set the elevation using a known topo line so I had a good reference. Comparing it with our county's GIS records, I was able to get the lat/long calibrated a bit closer.

If I start hunting from the truck, I typically start it up about 50' away and go back to the truck to get the rest of my gear out. Then after locking the truck, I'll grab it on the way into the woods; giving it a chance to get set up away from the metal truck. Probably overkill considering I've had it on in the truck and compared the travel speed versus my odometer and the whole time, it tracks my movement on the roadway map......but it seems to be the same issue you're seeing. Works while driving but parked, it goes nuts.

 

If nothing, I can confirm similar operation! I don't use it when I'm in a parked truck so I never cared that much about the issue and it worked when I walked/drove.

Does your Garmin have the electronic compass? If not, it will only work when you are moving. My guess is that this is your problem. If it does have the electronic compass, metal shouldn't affect it.

Never mind. I looked up the 530 on the Garmin website and I see it does have the electronic compass. I have the 60csx, and when the compass acts crazy like that, all I ever have to do is calibrate it, and then it works fine. One thing to remember is that every time you change batteries, the compass needs to be calibrated again in order for it to work properly. Are you sure you have calibrated it? Which is done by turning it slowly in a circle twice?

-Well guys for the money I spent on this thing I was pretty disappointed, Ive talked with guys who say there's is awesome but mine was a lemon, I took it back to Sportsmans and went over things with them and when we pulled out a regular compass the compass on the rino was still off by quite a bit! And yes we calibrated it. I was having to many glitches in it so I went with the Oregon 450T with the 24k wa/or mapping. Ive played with it 1 day and am already very happy with it! I'm sure the rino's are fine but I'm picky with my gear and I didn't feel comfortable spending 500 bucks and it not work how I thought it should.

Why would you need a compass with a GPS???I carry a regular compass for back up and have never looked at the one any either of my GPS's

With a compass you can follow a bearing to wherever you need to go, no batteries, and no worries about losing satellites if you're under a heavy tree canopy or down in a narrow canyon.
