Not trying to sound rude here -

Why a large GSP as your first condition of considering a breeding?

Wouldn't bird drive of both parents, health and everything else take precedence over size?

Everybody likes a good looking dog, myself included but, work ethic, drive, nose, eyes and overall health for me far out-weights size anytime. I think most "oversized" breeders have put the important things like eyes, nose, hips etc all on the back burner for sake of just breeding a big dog.

I'll take 70lbs with a brain over a dog with an extra 30lbs of stupid any day- Big dogs can't work long days like small ones- poops get bigger fast too.

I hear ya- just curious. Ty- my male is kenneled next to a all black GSP- didn't know there was such a thing. Timid little dog- haven't seen it work yet.

My buddy got a pup from Idaho Hunting Dogs in Shelley, Id.  They have several females they breed with their male Fritz.  We went down there to pick his pup up July of '09 and got to get a good look at all of their dogs.  Madison which is the dam of my buddies dog is a large framed female.  I have a 60 lb. male shorthair and she stood a bit taller than him.  Fritz their stud is average height, but is a very stout GSP.  My buddies male pup that came from these two was up over 60 lbs before he was a year old and now is probably pushing 70 at just over a year.

PM if you want to discuss this. It's interesting and I just went through this. First dog was very small, aggressive to the whole family, bit my daughter and had to go. She is a great hunting dog and because of that fact, she was adopted by the trainer I was working with. Lucky for her and me as otherwise not sure what would've happened to her. She is now 34lbs @ 10 months.....so very small dog. She was out of FOX GLOVE kennel in Vancouver.....DO NOT GET A DOG FROM THEM... I'm happy to explain the 10 reasons why.

Fast forward..

Got another GSP pup, 3 months ago, from a guy who bred his dog and just had one litter. We were very selective before choosing him....Interestingly his female(and the pups) are large dogs. My pup is now about 50lbs @ 6 months old. Vet says she will be 60-70 lbs. She has a great disposition, is hunting well and training is going well.(has 5 birds shot over her so far) Anyhow, after hunting with and owning several shorthairs over the years, I believe the larger dogs tend to have a better disposition, while still being good hunters. Yes, small dogs might be more nimble hunters, but for a dog needs to fit in with the family. Yes, there are many variables concerning the parents and lines, etc. but assuming they parents are good hunters and i could choose between a large and small GSP...I would pick one the larger one.

If my pup wasn't fixed she is a big female not pure bred though but pretty dog.  she is all black  but has lab blood in her she is sittin at 68 pounds right now
