Elk and deer at the same time
« on: August 23, 2010, 12:33:28 PM »
Early archery elk seems to overlap early archery deer.  Does anyone hunt both at the same time or are the styles of hunting just too different to accomplish that?  I'm a first time elk hunter this year so, please excuse the stupidity of the question.

12 days of early elk hunting are spent doing just that. Deer can be had at anytime during the two seasons.

Depending where you are hunting you can get either animal when you are out.  Where we hunt we see both elk and deer and will take whichever we see first.
You can only achieve what you dream, so dream BIG!!!

I wont take an elk in early season unless its one heck of an animal that I cant pass on. There is just something about the cold high country late elk hunt that I dont want to miss out on. I'll take my deer anytime and spend the rest of early season looking for bear.

I'll be focusing  on elk, but will take a deer if given an opportunity that won't interupt my elk hunt.

I'm mostly hunting areas that are a little better for one or the other, but most of them do overlap.  I'll take whichever I come across.

Deer seem to be a little more spread out Where we hunt elk during the early season.  Late hunt seems to be a better hunt for deer and elk.  At least where I hunt

I usually try to kill two birds with one stone.  Someone in the group usually always bags a nice deer or bear while elk hunting with a bow.

:yeah:  I dont usually see many deer when elk hunting in the areas i do but given the chance i would take one for sure. Seems like the opposite always happens to me though... im out late season deer hunting and get into the elk when i would never expect to

I focus on elk when it's open, but if a REALLY nice buck presents itself with a shot I won't pass it up.  Got a sweet spot for deer I focus on in another area.

Ill be stopping by the deer killing fields on the way to elk hunt.  Expect to tip over a tasty small buck, have him at the butcher and ready by the time I get out of Elk camp.  Must say it's not unusual to see a Mulie or two when stomping around after bulls, but I've never shot one.

I specifically target a big Buck I have scouted for the first few days of Sept, then off to chase elk, sure I wouldn't pass up a giant, But the chances of That happening while chasing elk are next to none,  happened once in 20 yrs  :chuckle:

A oppurtunity is a oppurtunity, I will always shot a deer during elk season cause if I dont I typically will eat tag soup.  Take the chances you get unless you are one of those trophy hunters. It dont need horns to taste good or fill my tummy.

For me, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness (GMU 249) is the hunt I would go for.  The hunt is 3pt bucks after Sept. 1st then on Sept. 7th (this year) the "Any Elk" kicks in; most everyone focuses on mature bulls.  You can also take a bear if you want and get a chance.  It is a pack in wilderness hunt so be prepared to camp out.  3 peaks outfitters and icicle outfitters pack drop camps.

I too go specifically for elk but am always ready to shoot a buck if one comes along.  I won't take a doe until the last day or two of late season though.  My first couple of years bow hunting were different...it was shoot anything legal.  Once I had a few animals in the freezer I began to get a little more selective.  Any animal with a bow is a challenge and they all taste good.

shot this dude 10 minutes into the elk opener last year....

I'd interupt my elk hunt for a buck like that anytime. Nice buck!

multi deer tag for me. Trying to put my kid on a big bull , if old mossyback steps out though he's in trouble. I'll scout for a bull this weekend if we happen across a good buck then bonus.

I always go out on deer opener to continue my search for the Big One! But usually wined up waiting to pull back the arrows once elk season starts up, just one of those things.
