« on: August 23, 2010, 03:16:26 PM »
i just got my first bear and am looking for a place i can get it just tanned with the fur on? i live in the monroe area so somewhere preferably within i dunno an hour drive or so? My option for a full rug are kind of shot, because i already cut the feet off but i did get the entire head/nose/ears. anything helps?

yes i already have the skin off and in the fridge, putting it in the freezer, i split it straight up the middle from anus to mouth, center of the front legs and back of the rear legs. i tried to follow the pics in the bear skin thread at the begining of the taxi section. but i cut the feet about 3 inches up from the pad. im just trying to get it off to somewhere before it gets bad, not sure how long i have, im new to this. kind of just wanting to get it tanned for now maybe get felt put on later. Im low on cash i just bought a new mathews bow and didnt expect a bear this quick.

quil ceda told me to pack sand they said that they dont do any fur on till late sept. they refered me to a taxi, Thorton. He said he doesnt do just tanning and if i really wanted it done it would be about 80$/sq foot, but he encouraged me to explore other options.

KYLE Z,

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this post.

First off when did you kill the Bear? If it is not in the freezer than get it in there ASAP! Fold it, do not roll or wad it up.

This is just my personal experience with Quilceda.  I personally will have to be really hard pressed to send any hide to them for hair on or off tanning.  I have seen some of there stuff and I didn't care for it.

If you still have the feet and you haven't left them out very long a rug may still be possible I have worked on some real machete skinning jobs if you get my drift. Pathfinder posted a link to one.

If you just want it tanned hair on I can do that for you as well.  I charge $50 per L/F (nose to base of tail).  So for example a 6' Bear will be $300 + tax.  4' Bear will be $200 + tax, etc.

When dropping the Bear off I ask for 50% deposit. When you drop your Bear off I will give you a pretty close guesstimate on what it will measure out to. The deposit will be based on that.

I am not real close to you.  I am just south of Olympia in Rochester but I can do what you are wanting.

I know you are new at this so take it for what it is worth.  You should have all of this figured out before you pulled the trigger.   :twocents:  Know your budget and plan accordingly for caring for your trophy weather bear or anything else.  In this warm weather you often loose your trophy very quickly if not properly cooled and cared for.  It can be a sad ending to a great hunt to find out that the cape/hide has spoiled.  I speak from experience having lost a 14 inch antelope cape.  :(

Wapiti_hunter2, Antelope are one of the most touchy animals there are to mount.  I have heard of hunters shooting it walking up to skin and gut it and the hair is already falling out in clumps.

shot sunday 930, rainy day. in the fridge at 2 pm, in the freezer monday at 5 pm. yes i folded it, wet side to wet side then into thirds, i cleaned the fur with a towel to try and remove, blood/moisture then re-folded and froze. the bear was 170 gutted, not sure exact measurements, its frozen.
i did have this planned out but obviously the website does not mention fur-on is seasonal, i was not thrilled.
