I am curious about hunting Deer during Archery season on Forth Lewis. Do you have to get permission some how or just check in and is there a fair number of deer out there to make it worth checking out?

need to go on North Fort to register at their outdoor gear issue bldg, pay thier $5 fee, watch a safety movie, and if you want, buy the map that details the areas you can hunt.  went out there last year with a friend and didn't see much but plenty of sign.  gonna try it out again this year, since i'll be modern for deer instead of archery.

hope this helps...i know there are animals in there..plenty of fields and wooded areas to hunt.

When you go, have valid driver's license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance or you will not be let in.

Yeah, you should have all that anyway, but entering Ft. Lewis, you will get checked.

Have a full description of the weapon you are going to use. If there is a possibility that you may hunt with a different weapon, have the information for allweapons that may be used. You can only hunt with the weapon you register with.

Archers must wear "hunters orange" at all times.

It's the "Northwest Adventure Center" that you register at.

Wait until the last weekend. The Fort opens up the central impact area. Where all the bullets from the all ranges end up. Lots of deer in there because over the course of the year very few people go into that area for safety reasons. The deer are used to the gun fire.

I have a friend how hunts out there a lot (he is ex military). There are lots of deer, and he says there are also poachers in there to. Havent been out there to see for myself but that is what I hear. This is in areas that you dont need to go through a gate to get to.

Because of the ranges the deer are pretty used to gunfire, so they are not gunshy.

Don't forget to register for your you zones ahead of time so you know you are in the open areas.  They'll also let you know how many other "honest" people are in the zone with you.
