Back from Alaska!
« on: August 24, 2010, 05:54:41 PM »
Had a good hunt, my guide was awsome, but the outfitter was not! >:(  Over all still a good hunt.  Weather was tough, but we managed to find a very nice ram on day 8 after many miles of steep and rocky.  We managed to nail the ram at about 9:30, but after he took about a 1500 foot tumble, we weren't able to recover him till the next day.  Well, while we were hiking down to recover the ram, we found this nice caribou bull and I was able to take him at 430 yards.  So we processed the bull, and left him to cool.  Then we finally found the ram and took pics and processed him...broke one horn and pretty much hammered the meat and cape....anyway we then packed up the sheep, our camp, and as much caribou as we could carry....after 5 miles of tundra, brush and swamp with well over 100lb packs, we were whooped.  We got flown back to base camp for some much needed rest becuase we had been spiked out for 5 days.  When we got back the next day to reteive the rest of the caribou, two griz had decided thay they liked the nice clean steaks more than we would...oh well, I wasn't going to argue with them.  Anyway here are some pics, I'm still trying to clean gear and get orgainized for elk, so not much of a story....enjoy.

Way to go and very nice ram...  What was wrong with outfitter?  Sorry to hear that, but looks like trip ended very well for sure....

yeah it was a good hunt, but the outfitter was just not very proffessional with his camp, the way he treated the hunters or his after the harvest care of the hunters or the animals.  Could have made it a lot better with just a little more effort and care.

It was a very tough hunt, lots of climbing and hikin in nasty rocks and brush, but well worth it.  Hopefully the cape is still good, I think it will be o.k. just a few extra "character" scars on him.  Good to be home, didn't even recognize my girl, she is growing like a week! :chuckle:

Nice job, congrats on your hunt and little girl :chuckle:  I would love to here more about your process, booking fee etc...  Only if you don't mind sharing.  I am in the process of gathering information and planning on a 2012 Alaska Outfitted Hunt for Bear and Caribou.

I flew to Anchorage, then got picked up by the outfitter and taken to his house in Wasilla.  From there we flew out in his super cub...he has a hanger at his house.  We hunted on the west side of the Alaska range.  A friend of mine is a booking agent and recommended this outfitter to me.  I just dealt directly with the outfitter after that.

Congrats on a great hunt ! You roughed it out, and got a great reward.
I know what you mean with your comments about your outfitter. You hope and pray you really know this guy by your phone and e-mail conversations, but sometimes they fool you a bit.

Some rugged country indeed.

Great job !

To me, there are few animals as beautiful as a Dall ram on the wall !

thanks falcon.  Yeah I was mislead by the outfitter some.  It was still a good trip, but if he would have done a few small things better, it would have added up to a great trip...definetly learned a lot.

Ty, nice job getting the tags filled.  Even with the outfitter issues, you'll have some great memories of the hunt and guide.  Time to spool up for elk now.  You have any archers booked?  Bet you will treat them different from your experiences, not to say you don't already treat your customers well.  Hopefully come October I'll have some trophy moose photos to share.

you are right Cle Elum, the sting is kinda fading, and I actually did have a good time, just could have been a little better.  Getting geared up for elk now, got one client for the first week, then I'm hunting on my tag the second week.  Can't wait, got at least three bulls coming into the trailcam, gonna go check it tomorrow and put up another, hope to have some big bull dead on the ground pics....good luck.

Good luck on the elk tag, I assume Peaches Ridge tag.  Bunch of fires started up today over towards republic, collville and Spokane.  Hopefully no problem with my scouting trip next week.  Later
