Caliber selecting for fun

I've been personally faced with the same dilemna, have a 25-06 for antelope and smaller deer, Have a 300 win mag for elk/bear and when deer might also be on the menu. Have a 325wsm for the Moose and big bears of the world, so was looking for a "tweener".  Went with the 7mm08 in a Stevens.  Short action, light weight, inexpensive.  Have yet to shoot it but all reviews are good and it's really just the older model Savage, which was not pretty but always got high marks for durability and accuracy.  Weighs just over 6lbs and will wear a lightweight 2-7 scope.

Otherwise, just take advantage of the incredible ammo selection available in .243

I have been really happy with my 270wsm. It is a Remington 700xcr. Shooting handload 140gr. Nosler Accubond flat hammers mule deer. Taken them from 85yds. all the way out to 550yds. so far.

OK: I like the short action, the difference. long range performance.
7-08 sweet low recoil accurate shooter.
270 wsm/ factory loads smoke the standard 270, reloads they are about the same. So how much shooting do I do at/beyond 400 yards.??
I am thinking if I know 400 yard shots are on the menu, I'll use the 300WM anyway. so for a light, deer killer, normal ranges.

Since you have the light and heavy game guns, I vote for an AR in .308.  Reliable, tons of ammo choices, can do smaller deer types all the way to black bear and maybe even elk with proper load and discreet trigger.  Plenty of manufacturers are going with the .308 as their hunting AR caliber.  Better availability than the 6.8 (not a bad choice either).
