It’s starting
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:38:26 AM »
I heard the 1st flocks of snow geese for the year last night about 10:30pm.  They must have followed the back side of the last front south.

Any birds on Fir Island yet?

I heard those too.  I live in the South Forest Park area- took me a minute to figure out what it was-

Skillet & I know what we heard; there’s no mistaking the cries of migrating snow geese.

There were snows flying over the West Everett, Mukilteo area last night, Aug 26.  I’ve never heard them this early either but they were there.

according the wikipedia, the record low (F) temp on Wrangell Island in Aug is 20F.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrangel_Island

according to

http://www.wunderground.com/global/RS.html

it is already snowing in some areas of russia, and in the 30's on the islands surrounding Wrangell.. maybe a cold snap could have sent a few off already?

They are specs.  I have been watching them.  No snow geese in sight.  The snows should start arriving end of Sept. to 1st week of Oct.
There have been some large flocks hanging around in the fresh cut fields.  Most of the specs will be out of the area by mid to late Oct. heading down to Klamath Falls and California area.  Drive around and you will see that they aren't snows.  But still gets you excited.

I did check Fir Island and the Standwood area today as I was see what field the honkers were in for early goose.  Several fields of specs.

that makes more sense, but even specs would be great to watch right now.

Unfortunately I don't believe you can shoot them the early goose season.  I wish though.

OK, I’ll go with specs.  My bad.
I haven’t seen any since I moved from Texas back in the day.  I think I’ll run up this weekend and check them out before they all fly south.
