Lucky $ob
« on: March 14, 2008, 08:04:31 PM »
More to follow...here's a taste of my day.  I called this guy in to about 25 yards Compliments of Bearman rics sick elk.   The day SUCKED.....snow 6 inches while I was on the mountain....wind blew 30 mph or more, and then it fogged in tight.  I have a fever and don't feel well, and missed my truck in the fog.....worst ever.  More details and pics to follow.

Miles and I didn't connect, so I went after some big bull pics.  Trying to figure out where they are at.  I found all the cows and spikes.  I got there at daylght and found the cows and spikes.  I couldn't get as far as I wanted to with snow and my truck, so off I went.  It hadn't snowed yet, only he occasional raindrop.

sorry for the quality...bit dark yet.

I pulled th tuck over into a snowbank and headed up the hill.  It was starting to get real foggy.  I just came out into the open and I noticed movement to the right.  A coyote came out of the rocks and was poking along.  He was about 30 yrds away and closing.  My camera was in my backpack because of the weather.  There was no way to g tit out without caring him, os I just sat and enjoyed him.  He was on the scent.  Turkeys I think as there was fresh sign.  Anyway he was kind of going away from me, but then tured around and closed to about 15 feet before he noticed me.  He then turned inside out. :chuckle:
I went oup the hill a bit more and came out of some reprod rightin the middle of a group of 10 tom turkeys.  One was struttin.  I froze, again kicking myself for my camera.  Onw was getting nervous and eyeballing me and the struttin bird hmmered him.   They all got uncomfortable and disappeared in the fog.  I took my pack ff and grabbed my camera.  I looked up and this is what I saw...

Now that the camera is out of the pack, didn't see a frickin thing :)  It got amazingly dark, kind of like an eclipse, then the sky opened up and it started snowing.  I kept trudgeing along.  I was after the elk, so figured I'd probably be able to see one of their sheds.  Visibility wasvery limited though. I contnued up the mountain and finally got into the elk.  There was some bull sign, but still alot of smalleer tracks. I climbed and climbed, then heard a blue sound off.  Most of the time I hear them calling for mates.  This time it was a sifferent call.  He was fighting with another blue.  It was foggy as heck but I closed the gap just as the one got his butt kicked.  Here is the loser....

I wish there hadn't have been fog, I might have scored some high country struttin pictures.

I was just bout ready to turn around, but knew I was close to a bench where Lil and I saw about 200 elk last fall, and I was in lots of sign.  I pushed on and sure enough, there were about 50 animals on the bench.  Mosty cows, but about 10 young bulls I guess, all packin.  No big ones.  They held tight as the weatherwas so poor.  They milled a bucnh, but DID not want to break cover.  I didn't bother with any pics as it was so nasty, they'd just been blurred.  I tucked myself in the timber and headed for home.  IT WAS NASTY.  I was coated in a couple inches of ice.  Talk about good camo.  Anyhow I bailed off the mountain.  Apparantly, in my tryin to avoid the weather, I took the wrong ridge.  Then the wrong canyon.  I ended up Miles from my truck.  I got below the fog line and about crapped my drawers.  I wasn't lost persa as I knew where I was....a long way from where I wanted to be.  In the meantime I scored some more coyote shots....

I was heading down the road, the one my truck was parked on several canyons away, and I came across fresh coyote tracks.  There were three sets.  Now it was spitting snow off and on, fog off and on, rain off and on and these tracks were steaming.  I stopped for a second and pulled ou my bearman Rick call.  I gave a nice impression of a dieing elk, and sure enough here he come.  I just held still.  He stopped at the crap along the road and marked his territory...

Then he approached.  I guess he got to within about 20-25 yards I suppose.  I wasn't really paying attention, but he was close.  He stopped behind a bush and I fisgured my oppurtunity was lost, as I figured he would bust.  I snapped a couple.....

and then took a couple steps backward.  He moved jumped but turned back around and moved about 5 feet forward.  Like I said, good camo.  Iwas in camo but was mostly white from the snow...
Then the photo shoot began.....

Thats it for the coyote.  I saw two bucks that had shed.  This guy didn't look like he was doing to well.  He never got out of his bed.  I spotted him and cicled him to try not to disturb him.  Apparantly he was ok with me.

This one was at 72 power freehand(not recommended).  At this elevation the snow had turned to rain.....

I had a shed hunting trip planned for this afternoon and tomorrow, but not sure now.  I have a fever this morning and soccer games to go too, so I think I will take it easy today.  NOT TO MENTION...I hiked way farther than I should have and I can't even move now. :)

I hope you guys enjoyed the story and pics.  There are a couple coyotes that should be glad to be alive today.  The fur on the onw still looked OK.  The others were looking a little raggy.  Lots of red in those last two.  Now if I could only have gotten that wolf on film like this.  I never did find the big bulls.  Someone must have seen them as they have gridded the area with their wheelers.  Tehy are absolutely destroying the country out there.  Idiots.   Another ridge to climb I guess and another $100 in gas. :)

Nope, with the Panny believe it or not.  I didn't want to risk taking the canon out in the weather, not to mention its a hawg to pack around on my extreme trips, and I had some ground to cover.  I'm excited about them.  I was thinking about sending a couple to some of the predator magazines to see if they were interested.
