TC Chambering
« on: August 29, 2010, 07:46:24 PM »
I have been considering the purchase of a TC Contender or Encore pistol.

My question for the gurus is:

What is the most efficient, hard hitting, long range chambering for the 14 inch barrel?

Thanks,
K

what are you wanting to hunt, is the key thing. ;) the contender has a lot more limited calibers then the encore hell you can get into 30-06 and higer powdered rifle cals in the encore. in the contender the best are the 35 rem 30-30 45-70 7mmtcu for deer+ sized game

Sorry, should have been more specific.
15 inch Encore
Large deer and perhaps elk

There's your choices through EABCO...
you can get a big heavy hitting long range caliber but the thing you gotta remember in my opinion is it's stilll  a pistol and you still got to be able to hang onto it and shoot it without flinching. Any of those bigger rounds are gonna kick the crap out of anybody.

if you want big knock down and hard hitting the best for you would be the 500 sw with muzz brk on it. or the 338 federal are the hardest hitting for what i would want myself. if you wanted one that still has good knock down and a little more easy to hang onto i would go either 270win-7mm08

The 338 Federal may be the perfect package in a 15" Encore. Recoil shouldn't be bad at all, and it should give you very good trajectory and energy out of the short barrel.

I've got a 375 JDJ with the muzzle tamer on it for the contender and it is a shooter and amazingly enough it is easy on the wrist, I also have a 15" 308 in the encore and it is all i want to shoot with factory loads so I hand load them down just a bit and it is now an easy shooter, I also have the 338 federal in a 28" barrel and it shoots nice but I don't think I would want to shoot it as a pistol with out a tamer on it. I guess the moral to my story is if you go big add a muzzle tamer and you will never be sorry.

I'd say .338 Federal as well...

Otherwise, look at the .308 barrel. It will outperform 30-06 with most loads, and using a good bit less powder. I know, seems counter-intuitive until you think about how much powder is getting burned AFTER the 15" of barrel length--the extra powder in the '06 is a waste! You can also get 15" barrels in .300WinMag but they are frame stretchers, and again more bark than bite.
.308 is also cheap, common, and easy to reload.  ;)
I left it better than I found it...did you?
