First Bear!!
« on: October 19, 2010, 01:48:28 PM »
Finally got one, walked a lot of miles and burned a lot of gas looking for A bear. I've been on leave so the story is a little late. I shot him on the 8th of OCT. So, me and a buddy got into the basin at around noon. We start glassing, and 10 Min into it I spot one across and at the head of the drainage, we can see him without bino's so we figure he is decent. It takes us a little over two hours to get around and above the bear. On the way we spotted a sow with a cub not 300 yds away from the first one. So we slide down through the huckle berries, which were all ripe, and bear scat down into a position about 225-250 yds from the first bear. He was behind some trees, but we could see him eating through the branches. I found a comfortable place to sit, cut myself a shooting stick and waited. My buddy went up the hill a little ways to try and find a better shooting position. A few minutes go by and the bear comes back out and is walking down into the creek bottom towards me. I pull up, one shot, dead bear. After the celebrating, we slide down to the creek to get our hands on him. Turns out to be smaller than we both thought, but I couldn't be happier. Young boar, beautiful chocolate color. On the way out we seen a black one in the next drainage, and some mountain goats. Great trip, ready to do it again. All i had was a cell phone to take pics with and didn't think to put his tongue back in, sorry about the quality.

Jake,
Great bear,  wish I hadn't been running all over and would have been there with you guys!  Did you do any calling at all or just spotting?  Nice color phase!
