Did you hit that dang thing with a hatchet?  That's a hole that can only be made by a few things: axe, skinning knife, Rage 2 blade, tomahawk, etc.  Cool job to get it done on opening day!
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

G5 Montec. Seemed like a relatively (ie: in relation to other broadheads) small broadhead. Sure got the job done though. I lost 2 of them due to a lil bit of buck fever and poor distance judgement... I was probably about 30 yards away thinking I was more like 50.

Lucky for me he died literally next to a road. Good thing seeing as how I was 500' or so of elevation below where I had parked. I'd probably still be out there dragging him.

That's pretty damn cool!  Tell us more about the hunt.

-Steve

I suppose this would be my first spot/stalk type hunt also. I've hunted whitetails in Tx... way different.

I spotted a bigger, older buck from about a half mile away down across a valley right during the morning twilight. I made my way down and was watching him graze/browse into the wind opposite a small knob from me when I decided to go around it to cut him off. That's when I saw the deer I ultimately took. He ended up literally between me and the larger buck, so I had to weigh my options... Wait for the younger one to pass at the risk of losing both, or take the shot. Seeing as how it was so many firsts for me, I kept it simple and took the 'easier' one.
Turns out I'm a better stalker than judge of distance. He was less than 30yds away browsing and rubbing without knowing I was there yet. Next thing I had to deal with was him coming right towards me, not having seen me. I was real worried he'd see me up close and be gone. Luckily he stopped and turned. I sent two high (didn't find them either  :() before I settled down and got it right. He wandered on to an undeveloped group of private parcels and died. I called the game warden and he came out to check things out. Real nice guy, by the way... Helped me drag the buck back onto the DFW land and offered to help clean him!

Good story - I think you did the right thing in shooting that buck.  I've made the mistake you avoided...
