First off, i'm not saying it's the right thing to do and I wouldn't normally do it.
However...last year muzzy hunting with my dad, ok more like driving around just seeing what we can see (Dad doesn't get around like he used to), we pulled up to an old clear cut.  The cut was in a valley spanning both sides, but in the bottom there was a good chunk of timber left.  We sat there for about 10min and were getting ready to leave when just for the heck of it I let out a "chuckle" from the bugle.  Immediately we heard a response from that timber.  I made a whiny spike sounding bugle and this elk went absolutely bizerk tearing up something in that timber.  I stayed quiet until the "thrashing" stopped.  Made another bugle and this guy was heading right for us.  Out of the timber he comes in full view...truck sitting on the landing in plain view.  I let out another chuckle and he's still coming, gruntin and huffin and puffin.   To make this short, he stopped about 90yds from the landing and never presented a shot.

So...all I'm saying is, just because you call from/near the truck doesn't mean you'll scare everything off.  And like I said, I don't necessarily agree with it, but it CAN be effective in the right area.

This is not something I EVER do or have ever done.  But I met a guy in N. Idaho who drives up and down the same chunk of 5 miles of hiway every morning before work.  Drives a mile, parks and bugles, repeat.  When he get's a bugle he calls work on his cell phone and says he won't be in, I've seen all three bulls he's killed the last three years and I'd have killed every one of them if I had the chance.  I know several people who know him as well, and they all say that's how he does it.

But yes, in general it does peeve me to be driving down the road to hit another draiange to come around a corner and see someone sitting at the head of a drainage bugling out the window of their truck.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

Moley...I don't see anything wrong with you calling this way. Elk are used to hearing cars/trucks running up and down logging roads so when you stopped and sat for awhile from the elk's perspective you were probably just another truck that drove on by and was gone 10 minutes ago. Then when you ripped out a bugle he thought you were a legitimate elk.

Keeping Dad out in the woods is a great thing-   8)  At 65 I'm not too far from that challenge myself but my kids don't hunt and my hunting buddy is older than I.   :chuckle:

I did have a bull respond to the squeeky door on my Ford Ranger once...  I was trying to slip out quietly to check out an area and SQUEEEEEK    Bugle

Did again just to verify and it worked.  They weren't within stalking distance at last light but my buddy found them in the morning ( without the truck door)
Keep 'em Straight!!! (and quiet)

Thanks Littlefish.
Like I said, it's not something I would normally do.  I was just trying to point out that maybe we don't always understand the circumstances when we see this happening.

GregE - You should of seen the smile and twinkle in the old guy's eyes.  I could tell it made his entire year right then and there.  Really miss not being able to beat the brush with dad.
Just driving around and talking about the past/present though...I'll never forget these times either.  If we luck into something, so be it.

Piggy backin on a post above, at about noon headin back in for lunch we pull over to take a piss i rip off a bugle from the landing and got one rippin in the draw... we drove around to the otherside to get closer dove off the hill called him in about 10 minutes.. done deal.. Got that whole kill on film..  It dont matter where you call from or anything as long as the bull is hot, you can be $hitty caller call from you truck, drinkin a beer, what ever... Hunting is Hunting Dude... If you dont like how other people hunt dont hunt public land.. and im not a new hunter or a road hunter but that particular time we called that bull in from the truck with a big chew in and a beer between my legs...  :P
Their going down!!!
