Got a bobcat - want a rug - need help
« on: September 02, 2010, 07:05:40 PM »
Hi all.

A buddy shot a bobcat and wants a rug mount (like to put on a wall).

He skinned and cleaned and put it on ice so he could get the hide sealed today.

Any suggestions on what's next?   He's willing to have it done professionally but doesn't know how to care for the hide until he gets it there.

Freeze it?   Salt it?

I have no clue.

Sage advice appreciated.

thx,

Dan

I sent you a pm/

Bobcats are notorious for slippage, you need to get that thing into a taxidermist or your freezer asap. Make sure you do not roll it but fold it so it freezes quickly.

You do not want to salt it unless you have everything split on it the lips, eyes, nose, and ears turned. If you salt it with out doing that it becomes a nite mare to try and get them turned.

Whatever you decide you need to do it quickly.

Thanks

So basically get that thing to the freezer....lol....

flesh to flesh, not fur to fur...Thatll help your odds of less slippage so hairs dont stick to eachother...fold the head last onto itself......specially since the ears are going to be the area thatll have the worst or easiest issues to slip...and will take the longest to dethaw.....But typically as long as you get it frozen and to the taxidermist quickly he will know what to do best...!

GOOD LUCK!

Not to be "Obama" (tarded) what is "slip"?

The hair slips off of the skin and you have a bald bobby.

This site is terrific.

Thanks so much for the help and the PMs.

I couldn't logon for a bit  (so I couldn't reply), but I could read the forum and got the right info.

Again, thanks so much.

Hope I can help some of you in the future.
