.308 Fan
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:18:00 AM »
I have a safe full of rifles & have own  dozens more, but I always seem to grab my .308 come hunting season. Currently I own three, All Remington's. #1- 700 SPS w/3x9 Leupold II, #2- 660 w/3x9 Burris compact, #3-700 LTR w/ 10X Super sniper.

My favorite load is with a 165 Hornady SST, Varget powder, Fed Match brass & Primer.

I have hunted Blacktails with gun #1 the last two years & have one shot kills on a nice 3pt & a non-typical 5x5.

Any other .308 fans out there?

I think it's a great cartridge, but I don't own one. I only have a 243, a 270, and a 30-06. A 308 would work just as well as any of the three I have. I could see myself buying one in a few years for my daughters to hunt with. I've got the 243 in a Remington model 7, but if they want to hunt elk, a 308 is what I would buy for them to use.

I have your #3 rifle with your #2 scope.  I "gave" my ex a beautiful Winchester Featherweight .308 with a brown laminated wood stock - still can't believe she really thought it was hers!  State of WY allowed me custody of a Springfield M14 for several years, loved that rifle.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I only own one .308 (Rem 700 Mil-spec 5R) but I think its one of the most underrated cartridges around.  My 5R is too heavy to be considered a comfortable carrying hunting rifle but it balances fantastically, looks gorgeous in stainless with the stock HS precision stock, and my 300 yard groups look like most rifles 100 yard groups.  It is a phenomenal shooter! And the fact of the matter is that .308 barrel will last several thousand rounds conservatively.  Whereas all of my 300 magnums will begin to lose accuracy at a fraction of that.  If you handload the bullet, brass, options are endless for the .308.......its like the small block chevy 350 equivalent of cartridges.  Can't say enough good things about the overlooked but highly versatile .308!

I'm Using H-4895, CCI Primers, Remington Brass, and Barnes TSX 180g bullets.  While testing I'm getting four round groups you can cover with a dime at 100yds.  First time reloading, I'm pretty excited!  Reloading truly is amazing compared to factory ammo!  Having a blast.

I like the 308 and most of the other 308 based cartridges.  I like the 243, 260, 7mm-08 and 308.  Never a 358 fan.  The 338 Federal intrigues me.

Right now, I have a Springfield M-1A as my only 308.

I love my .308   It's a Winchester model 100. From the research I have found that is what was used to take the B&C world record blacktail, so it will work for me on all the "little" ones that I get. :'(

I picked up a NIB Browning A-Bolt Varmint with BOSS a few months back. Gray/Black laminate with a wide forend, and a heavy (but not bull) taper barrel.

I've got a pretty penny into it, but I just don't have the need. I have range guns and hunting guns, and this one just doesn't fill a niche I think I need. I only bought it because I have two buddies with the same rifle, both shoot well under 1/2" at 100yds. I even bought new dies and three boxes of ammo.

 :dunno:
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.
