Closing the deal...not
« on: September 04, 2010, 02:05:07 PM »
Well saw a few this morning. But like Jr Prom, could not quite close the deal.

After a bit of hike found a place to start glassing at firstlight. Nothing for the first 30 minutes or so. Suddenly a bear, a really BIG one popped out of the bushes. Ok now were cooking! , easily 350 lbs plus around 500-600 yds away feeding in the open.  Able to close the distance to around 400 yds. Getting later in the morning and no way to get down to him closer as the area to access him was very steep and choked with trees and brush. Too steep, noisy to try and sneak down close enough for a shot.  Tried a different route to try and access downhill of him and the trail ended in steep drop-offs and cliffs. Damn!!! >: I now understood how he got so big. He had a very safe and secure area to live and feed. Wind started gusting to 20 mph per hr. Sat and watched him the binos for about 45 minutes and thought and thought. He stayed in his area and laid down. Saw one other small bear.

Have a to figure out  a way to get close enough for a shot....

A few pics ( crappy cell phone pics)

He is a really nice bear, especially for Washington. A dark brown color phase.  He is not far from the road and interesting to watch him react  to other hunters and hikers walking within 200 yds of him. Very sharp bear .I have had the same situation with big wt bucks that managed to find a spot that is very difficult for hunters to access unnoticed. Have to wait for the right conditions and make a run at it. Based upon experience only have one chance and then they disappear if you make a mistake..

That is what hunting i all about. The challenge. I f I don't manage to get a shot still neat to get reasonably close and observe a mature bear this big.

Last year I hunted hard for five days looking to shoot a bear. Learned a lot about bears by watching them, but didn't manage to take one. It was still a great hunt that I enjoyed tremendously. This year, hunting the same area, my son and I took our bears very quickly. There's still a lot of luck involved in hunting. Glad to hear that you enjoy the hunt, not just the kill. That's the way it's supposed to be.

Regards, Guy
