300WM or 300WSM bolt action, stainless and laminated or synthetic and handload for the application.
Light bullets and light loads for varmints or paper, bruisers for elk or other heavy game.

.22 LR. I can haul around 10x the amount of ammo, and it is capable of keeping me eating meat year round. This is what is in my "when the *censored* hits the fan" container.

.30-06. So far, with this caliber I've shot mule and white-tailed deer, pronghorn, elk, moose, mountain goat, white-tailed jackrabbit, coyote, blue grouse, ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, cottontail, feral cats, prairie dog, yellow-bellied marmot, and I'm sure some others that will come to me after I post.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when. No habitat = no game.

If you don't reload the 30-06 is tough to beat.
I like the 300 Win myself.
30-06, .280, .270, 7 Mag & 300 Win are all good though.

I'd be thinking .457 Wild West Magnum. From WW Guns in Anchorage. It's what some say Marlin based/stole their .450 from. It shoots standard 45-70, .457 Mag, a stretched 45-70 and .410.
Ya the .410 doesn't get much respect as a shotgun round maybe. But the 45-70 / .457 will kill anything that walks. And a .410 will leave enough meat on a bird or rabbit to feed ya if needed.
Of course there are double barell survival rifles....
