Little spike
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:31:35 AM »
Well labor day weekend almost as planned, nearly text book as it gets for public land. We have ten camp spots prepicked and a eleventh as a very last resort. Got into the woods late friday afternoon and all but the last resort spot was taken. The spot is lousy on top of a clear cut peak, no cover and lots of wind just a clay bank to allow a small camp fire.
Our hunt spot was pre selected back in Feb and we set up a lodgepole blind back in march. Blind is 30 yards off a road. The cameras spot the same deer group crossing the road and climbing the wooded hill at least three times a week since Feb.
We got in to late to set up camp before the hunt so we hunted first. The deer climb the hill daily at close to 630 pm. We got to the blind late about 545 pm. At 6 the does climbed the hill and a few minutes later a little spike came in. I waited until he got to the 30 yard mark and let the arrow fly. He bolted Down the hill about 5 yards and rolled about 10 strait down. My arrow passed through and hit the rotten stump I used for the 30 yard marker.
Doesnt get any easier. Had a quick cup of coffee and waiting for him to expire. Grabbed my arrow, walked down the road about 50 yards and got the truck. Didnt have to drag him more than ten yards. Got him field dress quickly and went to set up camp. By the time camp was set up it was dark, windy and cold so just filled him with ice, grilled some burgers and hit the sack. Although finished hunting we stayed the rest of the weekend just BS'ing avoiding the honey do list.

It eats well. Ive already grilled the backstraps and eaten 1 pound of ground. Although only a spike I'm not one to pass up the meat. I'd probably hold off for something bigger if I were a bone collector but the younger ones seem to taste better.

Way to go man 8)
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

BTW, that's a good lookin' little stack of firewood in the truck too ('cause I'm the kind of guy that notices a nicely stacked pile of good firewood...)
