My first Whitetail
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:24:05 AM »
Well after spending 5 days of hunting it came down to the last minute to finally get a shot off at a nice buck.  I started opening day of hunting in a tree stand over a small food plot sat until dark and only saw  few does and a couple fawns.  Day 2 thought we would try a ground blind over another food plot had a couple does and a small 6 pointer come out and mill around until dark but he was to small to harvest.  Day 3 tried the ground blind again, had lots of fun watching the hours tic away waiting to get down to magical last hour when everything comes out , turkeys were entertaining though. Day four tried the tree stand again with about the same results , the bucks just were not moving until it was to dark to shoot.   We did go out and try a few morning hunts but kind of tough early in the year for that.  As I was walking out from my tree stand on the way back to the house I was staying at, Garry my guide was sitting up on the hill watching some buck come out into some fresh cut Fields , knowing tomorrow was my last day to hunt he thought we should move the ground blind down by the fence line and see if that would bring me some better luck.                                                                                                                                                                                                 Well my last day I crawled into my ground blind about 4pm and began the waiting game  around 7 the does started filtering out into the cut field along with some smaller bucks.  Then had a nice buck come out into the field way beyond shooting range , dang just my luck I thought to myself.  As the last minutes of daylight tic away I start to think it might be a long 4 hour drive home tonight, I slowly started picking things up in the blind while keeping an eye for the chance of something to come walking down the fence line.  I packed the video camera away along with pretty much everthing else in the blind. I then figured I would take my arrow off the bow and rack it back in the quiver and put it on the bow.  After doing so I lade my bow back down and was going unzip the blind and walk out in the hope of catching something on the walk out. It was pretty dark in the  blind even thought there still shooting time left.  One last look out the blind and I couldn't believe what I saw and nice buck walking down the fence line at 15 yards in front of me. I quickly put on arrow on the bow and pulled back at that time he seen me move, the buck stood still looking right at me I settled my top pin on him and let it rip, all I heard was a loud whack and off he went.  He started running wide open and I thought oh that's not good, as I stuck my head out the blind I watched him run in about a 50 yard circle and come right back in front of me at 20 yards and pile  up dead right in front  of me ,all in about 30 seconds.  I just stood there speech less and thought that was one of the most amazing things I ever saw.  I cant tell how close I was to leaving to the blind before I looked up one last time.   I finally know the meaning of the last day, last minute of a hunt.    I just  want to thank Garry Greenwalt of wildcountryguideservice for all the work he did getting me set up and moving things around. This was my second trip with him and he works hard all year round knowing where the deer are on his place. He just started his guide  service and has some great land to hunt on and takes care of you real good.

It was difficult to hunt in the morning because of the wind , trying to get in postsion in between the fields they were in at night and the bedding area was tough without getting winded. Most of the big bucks were moving out of the field before light. We hunted two mornings and were up in the tree stands at 5am but seen nothing but does moving back to bed.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

What a great buck!  Even better that you worked for him like you did-

I also see we have a new standard for "classy field photos" this year, too.  (see what you started, BULLBLASTER?!?)
