Bowhunting Technique for taking Elk

I feel like I hunt hard but have had limited success getting close to animals resulting in very few shots so I figured I'd ask some of you more successful hunters how you get the results.  Hope you all had some fun in the woods over the last weeks and I figured now was a good time to gather some info before the late hunt in November.  Thanks

Why didn't you put calling as a method? In any case calling is the o ly way to go early season IMHO. One its by far the most exciting and two you are calling the shots and are more in control rather than praying something walks by. Bucking bulls is where its at.

If its a late season hunt then I'd have to say the tree stand method.

  the early season is your best bet, the elk are vocal and for the most part havent been scatterd to bad yet....Make sure you put the time in before season and are hunting an area that has elk in it!

I put other as well, Calling Elk is the way to go. Took a spike and a cow this early season. Called them both into 15 yards, two seperate occasions and places.

Bugle.
Cut the distance.
Set up.
Cow call.

If it's a herd, walk in cow calling and bust them up.  Then start calf mewing.

I like to call, but even though I've never sealed the deal I have come very close many times with spot and stalk.

I still hunt , always try to spot first I scan asfar as i can see then work back in . when I'm moving I make elk sounds , If I have bull tag i'll bugle . I'll respect those who do if i don't trying to keep the preasure off for those who have the tag . I've killed a elk or passed a elk every year for the past 18 years or so , 26 elk with a bow at age 41 , hunt hard and never worry about where you kill a elk if you do you'll miss opourtunitys late worrying about it getting dark . i believe that we make our luck . i also pretend I'm being hunted by the elk this tunes me into the sound i'm makingh in the woods . mid day stay in the woods take a nap and blend in . also I'll always go for a bull if I spot him if you wait to long something always  seems to blow it.

Impressive amount of animals you've taken.  Doesn't sound like you sit around waiting for an opportunity but instead turn each hunt into an opportunity.  Haven't been much of a caller (cow or bull) but did get a chance to use my calls this last season.  Animals where I was at did not talk much.  Looking forward to the late season but know the GMU's are cut back and it could even be wetter than early season if that's possible.  Thanks

I do a little of everything when hunting.  I've shot 3 elk out of a tree stand but I've called to them from my stand

I would agree with D-Rock as far as my methods. I take several things into consideration before I make a decission. This year I took a 4 point from a ground blind (actually ground cover). I had two come in on two separate occassions before I got the shot I wanted. Before that I spotted and stalked a six pointer. I got to within 42 yards of him but there were to many branches and twigs in my way to take a shot. None of the three knew I was there. Calls are great but watching the wind is critical in any situation. Good luck!
