Gettin' on Elk but they aren't talkin yet...
« on: September 08, 2010, 03:37:17 PM »
If spikes were legal i would be eating backstraps tonight, but sense they are not i am resting my bones to go back out tomarrow morning. Same area i got on a 5x6 bull, to day i saw 3 spiikes and what apeared to be a 3 point with some cows. Last night i think i stumbled on the 5x6 *not for sure though*. All of these spotings have been within a couple hundred yards of each other. Wonder why they aren't talkin' yet. Hopefully tomarrow they get more talkative cuz it's thick timber and sneakin' up on them in there is just about imposible.

Whent back out today got on some elk, unfortunaly they were cows. It's still fun hearing and animal come your way and your not sure if its a calf or a 300 class rosie. I am gonna let them settle down a bit, I may have been pushing them a bit. Will be back out on Saturday morning, hopefully the 5x6 starts talkin'!

Funny you mention that. There are a few talkin around the house but not many in the area this year. My dad called and said one place they are talkin and all the others he has been to they are pretty quiet. Seen them around but bulls are together with the cows. Should be anyday now. At least were we are hunting.  Good luck

Maybe all these reports about a late rut this year are true

Weather isn't the best for bugling.  We had two talking tuesday.  One of them is now in my buddies cooler.  Haven't heard another bugle since, and we've been in some prime country with a ton of rubs and wallows.

late rut my arse......its an early rut this year.   They may have gone silent with all the pressure, but the rut fired about 10 days earlier than norm this year.   I'm not talking pre rut jitters either.

I have been going to this spot for the last 4 weeks straight, and i think i can count on one hand how many bugles i have heard. As far as i know i am the only one in there, and before season i did not presure them. So in this spot either the big bull already has cows (which i have seen him alone twice, and saw some spikes and a very small branched bull with cows) or the rut hasn't really kicked in that great in my area. Think if we get a weather change it could kick them into high gear.

Lots of variety in animals, so its very possible, especially regional differences.

Had a mature cow come in today with 2 small calves in the Little Naches. She was really talking. She was about 20 yds from me for about an hour. A bull bugled two times near her but she was apparently not interested. The bull was close but could not see him because I was in a really thick draw. As Bone mentioned I think hunter pressure has the bulls quieted down.

Heard first bull on August 26 this year.

It was a dink and yes it was on the camera.  I didn't post a pic though:)  I did tell him that his bull was that one though a month and a half ago.  Kinda funny.

We were hearing tons of bugles the day before the opener, while it was still sunny. That night we were so excited we couldn't sleep thinking about what laid in store for us. The next day the rain came in and it seemed to shut them up, couldn't get anything to make a noise. What a let down! Finally, yesterday the sun decided to show and once again they were singing.  Did fill my tag though with an antlerless bull (little guy) but will taste mighty fine.  Taking a couple of days to rest then we will be back out Tuesday to see if we can fill my buddies tag.
