Just wondering what the deal with tagged bears are... there is one in the area I am hunting and just wanted to know if it was a problem bear somewhere or if they just randomly tag them..

both sometimes they have been taged and moved because they were a problem bear. but in some areas they do bear studies, to learn info on them.

I say shoot it and send the tag in and find out.

Yep, that'd be my plan...unless it was a sow with cubs or just one of those tiny Boo-boo bears...

All the ones I've seen or heard about that were tagged, were problem bears. Quite a few of them from Canada actually, that wandered down.
Seems like these days, with the number of bears, that the WDFW doesn't give them many more second chances.

The tag there was his 1st and last chance. Luckily he moved on. We even quit feeding the birds long before that. He spent 15 minutes with his tongue in the holes trying to get a snack after he pulled it down.

I harvested a sow a couple of weeks ago that had a red tag in her ear. I'm still waiting to hear from the WDFW bio bout it.

I shot a nice bear in Alberta with an ear tag. I contacted them and found out that this bear had been trapped several times. He wasn't a problem bear, this was WAY out in the bush. The university up there was working with fish and game doing studies.
