Shot a cow last night. I hit her a little to far forward and was not able to recover her. Makes me sick to my stomach I would much rather have missed. I feel bad for both the elk and myself. Nothing wore than wounding an animal. Didn't seem like the arrow went very far in so there is a small chance that she could make it. I hope she lives. Man I feel like crap, this is the one part of hunting that I hate.

It rained all night and is raining right now on the mountian. I had to work but plan on going up after I get off. My camp mates said they were going to try to find her thismorning but so dfar I have heard nothing. It does not look good.

Take a buddy, Cory, if you can (if you haven't already).  I've been in that position - both as the shooter and the guy helping - and the guy helping stays much more objective and calm nearly always.  Like you said, there is nothing worse than losing one and sometimes it affects how you think a bit.

Get a buddy, go back out and take another look.  You still might not find her but you can know that you did all that you could.  Good luck!

I had three people helping me look last night. All this rain I'm lossing my optimism. All be up there tonight again but it's going to be one of those stumble upon her kind of deals I'm thinkin.

Appreciate hearing that you guys have not given up.  Ran into a guy last year on opening day that left a cow out there with half and arrow in her.  I tried to persuade him and his son to go back out and find her.  His reply was that he'd done all he could (looked for about 4 hours) and was going to hunt a different area that afternoon    Did not agree with his solution/plan and 2 more hunters showed up at the trailhead and agreed and tried to convince them to go back out.  It's just my opinion but this can continue to give us bowhunters a bad reputation for wounding and killing animals and not coming home with anything to show for it except a dead animal for the local scavengers to feast upon.  As you stated it would have been better to have missed the shot completely than to have taken a shot that didn't hit where you wanted it.  If you had a good shot but missed for whatever reason don't be so hard on yourself but continue to put in the time to find her to the best of your ability.  I had a beautiful broadside shot at 30+ yards uphill last year.  Missed my mark completely and hit her high on the right side (5 or 6 feet off) and luckily hit the femoral artery and she went down in about 15 seconds.  @#*t happens.  Hang in there and good luck.

you might want to get rid of the bow territory thing. it could get ugly all styles of hunting loses animals. that is a fact. it is a shame, but part of hunting.

I think it's Illegal to use a dog but in some situations common sense has to prevail.

Just talked to a couple of other guys up at the camp.  They looked for her all this morning (4 guys), but can't even find blood.  Part of that probably chalked up to the wound being high and forward, and part of that being all the rain yesterday, last night and then again all today.  They are still hunting the area, hoping to get lucky and come across her.  Cory just got off work and was headed back up to look again.  I wish him luck, but at this point that's about what we are counting on.  Blind luck.

Well it's official she is lost. Hopfully she is going to heal up and live on. If not I hope the critters eat every last piece of that delicious meat. Me I'm eating my pride and drowning the sorrow with a few barley pop's.

Read this post and couldn't help but wonder why someone would post that they feel so bad but do so while at work instead of days later after exhausting all possible measure to recover downed game. I'm not faulting this guy for wounding an animal because despite our best efforts it does happen.  I would have never left the recovery of an animal I shot to my hunting buddies call in sick, take a vacation day whatever but stay in the forest for gosh sake.
 I remember once I was hunting elk in the same deteriorating conditions and I passed on a nice bull because I knew that the rain would destroy any blood trail before I could recover the animal. I chose to call it a day and although I didn't get that bull I didn't have to live with the fact that I might have made a poor decision.

Cory does not have one of those jobs that allows him to call in sick or take an un announced day off. i can tell you that Cory is a good guy and a good sportsman and in my mind all he is doing is being honest and true to the facts of life in the wide world of sports. ammo for anti's is not an issue to me, they will make up way worse things than this. just please be sure of what is fact before you call some one out.

Cory, sorry to hear you lost one.  Sounds as if the shot just didn't come off like you wanted, and that happens to everyone sooner or later.  Sounds like you and your friends did all you could to recover her, but it just didn't pan out, it's a sad deal but just how it goes sometimes.  Good luck.

I'm not surprised that Joehunter had a negative thing to say. Every time I get a response from him it's negative. I must have stole his lunch money in a former life. That said thanks to those who show support I know that I did what I could do. Hunting is just that, It is hunting, and sometimes that includes hunting for wounded game. I did all I could and am at peace with it now. Tragic? Yes, but also just part of the deal.

as far as I know military men and women cannot call in sick so does this mean they shouldn't be allowed to hunt just in case something should go wrong  Joe might want to watch it those glass houses make it so everyone can see in..

No matter how good you are if you hunt long enough this WILL happen sooner or later. It doesn't't matter what your weapon of choice is. If you did all you could to recover the animal just try to put it behind you and march on. It is surprising what these animals can survive and if you did not get a lot of penetration she may very well live.
