pups first real hunt- any advice?
« on: September 09, 2010, 01:28:46 PM »
this weekend is going to be my vizslas first hunt... hopefully my hard work is going to pay off.... im taking off for a few days on a grouse hunt/fishing trip up into the mountains and i think im gonna take my pup with me for his first real hunt. we have done plenty of gun-less hunts flushing up tons of quail and tweety birds, but this is gonna be the real deal... dont know how its going to go, but im gonna give it a try...  anyway, any advice for somebody taking thier dog on his first hunt? im also going to be taking the girlfriend as an extra set of hands to help with the dog.... how bad could it go? im optimistic...

catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

I smoke two fish in the morning, I smoke two fish at night, I smoke two fish in de afternoon makes me feel alright

I guess I join the club --  my 2 yellow labs start on North Dakota's opening day.
Advice I have received (obvious):  Make sure you can keep the pups from running too far forward.  (I hope the training collar worked.)
The pups seem to have the natural instinct.  My brother's choco lab may help with the adjustment, but I can't wait to get in the field and see.

Hi Jeepster,

I read you've had plenty of "gun-less" hunts?  I sure hope your dog has been around real gunfire or you might spend a lot of time looking for your dog.   :yike:

Enjoy your hunt and let us know how it went.

Take the dog over to Cooke Canyon and put it into the birds.
Or a site like it.
For a young dog its very important.
Good Hunts..

Agree on a trip to Cooke Canyon with the pup. I did it several times with my pup last year and it was a great way to get him into a bunch of birds.

Cheers!
