Sol Duc Elk Hunting
« on: September 09, 2010, 07:06:36 PM »
So I've been doing some scouting in the Sol Duc Unit. I've tried to border the park as much as I can, as well as to stay close to any sort of river I can, but I had a hard time finding any huntable areas. The terrain was too steep and there were a couple of road washouts I ran into (FS Rd 29, and FS Rd 2918), plus everything is way too grown over on the eastside of the unit it seems like. What's another part of the unit I can scout that has good exposure to some decent 4-6 year old reprod/river bottoms? I'm starting to wonder about the bottom of the unit, bordering the Calawah River, but I know some hogs have been taken closer to the Sol Duc over the years. I've got a couple more days to scout, as I'm preparing for the muzzleloader season, but I need to find some more places to check out. Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

uh oh, the old hog debate. :chuckle: Sorry, I don't know anything about the area. Do you have any pics of these hogs?

Last weekend I had a similar experience in the same unit, but further south down by the Bogachiel.  Camped and scouted and biked some of the gated areas.  The terrain was so thick and so steep, there's no getting off the trail!  No openings/meadows to speak of so had planned to head up to FS 29 and go in further East/NE.  Its definitely a jungle over there but has to be some clearings that are huntable.  I'm going during rifle season so keep me posted on what what you find and I'll share too.  When I was driving I ran into a herd of 20 bedded down but was fairly close to houses and was not on Forest Land, figures.  :bash:

I was talking to a bow hunter a day or so ago that didn't give and I didn't ask for details but says he sees elk every year in the sol duc area, Iv never hunted it but I'm told it can be a great hunt. 21 days and counting!
