Sucks to be you, tell your boss you want to work 4-10s like me and you would have tomorrow off.  That's good news about the amount of game they're seeing and actually getting a deer up there.  I usually dont see many deer but quite a few elk.  Good luck to you and your group.  My buddy and i are heading up there tomorrow around 12 hoping to locate some elk tomorrow night and put them to bed.

wow slow for me. My son and i got into some serious bull action on the opener. 6 different bull all where 5x5s and bigger. bugling around us, if i only had a peaches big bull tag i would be home tagged out already. 6 big bulls and only 1 cow and a calf with them. What is up with that?? 3 of the bulls where out of range but 3 where within a hundred yards. Full view.. Damn. Where are the cows. The other guys in are group have seen a couple?? I went out this morning not a bugle, or even an elk. had to come back for my daughters 16th and pick up my truck from the shop on Tuesday then back at it...

You guys have quite the camp up there!  We were into a lot of elk Friday evening while scouting.  Lots of bulls bugling all around us and saw one spike and a cow.  Saturday i only hunted 2 hours cause it got so hot, only saw 3 deer and 2 grouse.  Sat around camp and got a sun tan.  Saturday evening was still hot, no elk talking.  Some hunters decided to camp up on the ridge where we wanted to hunt, it was a great spot where the elk cross but they blew all the elk out of that area in a hurry.  Hiked down a ridge and had a cow trotting downhill towards me at 40 yards.  I pulled up pulled the trigger and "click".  Cap didn't even go off.  Oh well. Slept in Sunday, went out at 11 a.m. hunting, more like hiking didn't hear or see anything.  Hiked another ridge and heard several bulls.  Stalked down to the closest one which was straight down hill in a steep draw.  Cow called, jumped some deer, cow called he responded.  Buddy and i snuck over to a rock ledge and saw two cows 60 yards below.  I could see both he could only see the one.  We were about to shoot both then his stepped behind the tree so i ended up taking a shot on the one i could see and dropped her.  Quartered her and hung her in a tree then went around to another trail and hiked up the ridge and packed her out.

If you see this before you're done hunting, hunt by the lower gate and those ridge tops to the south, you'll see more elk up there than probably hunting lower gate to upper gate.

Congratulations.  I was up for the opening weekend and talked with a few bulls but never caught sight of any.  Now I just have to free up time to get back in there.

Well guys the elk aren't just up in the high hills.  That might be one of your problems.  The rut is closing and the bulls are herding back up.
Happiness is being in the woods!!!

That would be the one, I was up on the ridge to the south on Friday evening overlooking that area where that camp was put and there were elk right on that hillside above the camp and lots of bulls screaming their heads off. My buddy was the one that saw the camp there he was really discouraged and dissapointed someone would be that ignorant to put a camp in that area.  I mean there was a huge wallow like 100 yards from that camp, probably one of the best areas on that mountain to hunt, always elk there because of that pond and marshy area.

Sounds like you and i had similar problems with guns not going off.  Kind of glad mine didn't go off on Saturday afternoon cause it was so hot up there. Did your buddy get that somewhere around the lower gate or lower end of lookout?  I saw a tall spike Friday evening that direction glassing from the ridge tops.
Did you happen to see any bucks up that way? I was told there were some nice ones around lookout, i only saw does, come to think of it i saw more deer than elk.  Congrats on the elk.

Ya i love hunting around those wallows, that is a beautiful area. He got the spike across the valley from lookout. I did see a small spike on lookout. I saw a few deer but only 1 buck and that was up by our camp. not very big. I always eat my lunch and relax in that saddle off to the side if the trail in those trees trying to catch the elk moving back and forth. Worked last year but i fell asleep woke to a cow and a spike looking at me. Good Times
