West side rifle for Eatonville
« on: September 12, 2010, 09:56:49 PM »
I have a scoped 30-06 I also have a bunch of really nice open sight shooters.
If you were hunting just outside Eatonville, would you use a scoped rifle or a brush rifle?

Posting to see what you guys that hunt that area yearly use.
This will be my first time in the woods over there, friends have 18 acres bordering Weyerhauser land.
but i have to go scout all the land before even attempting to plan a trip there, but want the rifle selection done so the thing can get shot some before the season comes and be used to it again.

i'd pick something with a low power scope myself.  if my eyes didn't suck i'd go with a peep sight.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

guess i will have to go hiking around the area and decide myself.

Heck, finding the laws for the small area i will hunt is even a pain in the donkey.

when i first started hunting i thought id take my open sights 30 30 up and the second day i did i saw a monster buck at about 4 or 5 hundred yards. trust me its big if you can see the rack from that far. never got close enough to take the shot. id say use a scope thats what i do :) ill stick to peep sights just for muzzle loader.

scope! I can see better and shoot quicker than iron sights also the scope brightens up the light in under the trees.

I always hunt with a scope but I've always thought it would be nice to have an open sighted rifle for hunting in the rain. Scopes tend to get wet and fog up easily when you're hunting on a rainy day, even with scope covers it is a problem.

You'll be hunting in November, and it's likely to be raining the entire time, so I would definitely consider using a rifle without a scope. Chances are your shots are going to be no more than 150 yards and for that you can get by without a scope.

Behind eatonville......so the Mashel unit (<----I assume) is fairly thick with short lanes of fire.....I'd go with a brush gun, maybe with a 4x scope, but you could get away with open sights.   Big question is, are you a confident shooter with your brush gun with open sights?

I hunt that area and I use a scope at all times. I just leave the scope on the lowest power and that works just fine. If a long shot presents itself, you always can dial it up.
