Malaga cow tag = 1st Elk
« on: September 13, 2010, 04:14:42 PM »
Well I drew the early Malaga cow elk rifle tag. I've hunted up in some parts of this unit the last couple of years so I know some spots to start. With work and never ending home remodel and repair projects I haven't had hardly any time to get up there to scout and see where the herds are hanging out. Anybody been up there lately and seen some elk in this unit? Anyone had this tag before and had success? I know that the archery cow tag guys have already been in there but the 2 times I got up there to scout I didn't see anyone hunting. The hunt starts tomorrow and I'll probably make it up a night or two this week then hit it this weekend. Looking forward to getting my first elk and puttin some meat in the freezer.

Well, I finally tagged out on my first elk. It was 20 minutes to go on the last night of the hunt. She died about 100 yards ABOVE the road and there was a nice bank on the road so I could back right up like a loading dock.

It was the Malaga tag, so basically south of Wenatchee to the edge of and the bottom of the Colockum area. I had hunted all day Saturday and Sunday, and Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights and had seen only 3 cows and a raghorn bull on Wednesday night. Couldn't get a shot at them but made it happen at the last minute of the season Friday night.

I shot her with my .270 with 130grain Hornady Interbond bullets. Double lung shot through the rib cage so nearly no spoiled meat! She made it about 70 yards from where I hit her.

Congratulations on a fine lot of steaks

My wife actually drew the late cow tag for this unit.  If anybody has any insight to where to start the search during that time period, Nov. 6 thru Dec. 31st, I would greatly appreciate it.  I have been working six days a week and haven't had the time to look around the unit as much as I would have liked.  My work schedule doesn't appear to be getting any better either so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
RIP Colockumelk   :salute:
