Grayback Late Buck Hunt
« on: May 30, 2007, 03:16:13 PM »
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this hunt?  It's Nov. 15-18th.  I am considering putting in down as one of my four choices but don't know a whole lot about that country other than it puts out some big cross-bucks.

I haven't hunted it, but know a guy who does and has had that permit, and has seen and shot a couple dandies.  I've personally seen two very heavy hawgs from there that were both non-typical and just plain heavy bone.

Great tag to have if you can get drawn.  With them switching last year to 3-point and better, it's going to be putting out more huge cross bucks in a few years, maybe even this year.  I always use it as my second choice, right behind Desert.

I don't have the game laws in front of me, but I am pretty sure they extended the season this year.  I think it will be nov.  11-16 or 18.  I have hunted the general season down there before. The biggest I saw was a buck like the one posted above on here.  There are a lot of deer in the unit.  I talked to a guy one year when I was hunting and he told me his dad drew the late tag the year before and shot a buck that was close to 30 inches.  He said you need a lot of snow to push the bigger bucks out of the Indian reservation.  We were hunting pretty close to the border.  My buddy has an uncle that lives in goldendale, and he has killed some nice bucks on the general hunt also.

I have been drawn in this tag before and got a nice buck.  My only problem with this tag is you have to get some weather to move in or its kind of a waste

I heard that the indians pounded them and there weren't many to be found last year.  Maybe it was just the mild weather last year though that caused the drop in success rate. :dunno:

It is a good tag but I can think of better ones to waste points on.

I've hunted it as well, Lots of deer, and lots can be seen on private land and loads of blackie/mulie cross breeds.

the harvest stats were pretty bad for that tag last year if you look at the report.  that was last year though.. i think weather is important as well in getting the big boys in there.

Pretty much goes for a lot of the late season units IMO.  I agree though....with the right weather there is potential for hawgs in that unit.

I live there.  There are some real big bucks running around here now.  Have had them in my yard.  If you get drawn and don't mind some work, you can get into them.  You have to walk, ride a bike or horse up into timber company land.  I don't think the Indians got into them last year at all.  Here on the wildlife area, the day after modern rifle early season, the new gates are closed.  Our deer and elk did real well last winter due to these closures.

The buck in my gallery came from there during the general season. 5 minutes after i shot it i had 3 mexicans with rifles and no orange on walk up on my while i was gutting and skinning it. It has been a problem up there for a while, no tags, no orange. Where i used to hunt up there has gone to pot.
