Bike hunters: Do the bikes spook elk?
« on: September 19, 2010, 09:18:11 AM »
For you guys that hunt on bikes do the bikes spook the elk if you happen past some or do they just watch to make sure you pass?  Basically wondering if while you're still trying to locate them in an area if you could cruise around on your bike or if it needs to be ditches sooner than later and do the locating on foot?  Just trying to figure out how to cover a large area quicker to find where the animals even are...

It can go either way. Some times you'll cruise on by, other times they run.

The bikes are helpful for finding the elk but they can also be the problem.

:yeah:
The benefits far outweigh the negatives.  Just don't go rip roaring down up to a clear cut that you want to glass. Park your bike before you get there, leave it and sneak up on foot.  Don't just road hunt like guys in trucks trying to get from one area to the next as fast as possible.  Bikes will also allow you to hear elk in the timber as you ride if you go by quiet enough.  Bottom line, don't be in such a hurry!  Most guys whether on bikes or in rigs pass within feet of critters without knowing it because of impatience.

When I have biked into the middle of a heard they take off pretty quick.  When I am just riding along slowly, as long as I keep going they tend to just watch and then go back to their business.  However, I seem to be lucky with the wind.  I have caught them standing in the road and when I stopped we just do a face off they they figure out what I am.  Once they figure out I am MAN they are gone.  I use my bike to get to the area then do a lot of walking.  As long as there is a road and you can glass from then it is a great way to go.  Nothing will replace knowedge gained on foot.
